Lost Vlog 11 – Riff Idea #8 (Demo)

This vlog was originally suppose to be Vlog 33, but I decided to rerecord it because I wanted to do a shorter take. However, I was able to par down the dialog and thankfully I did because I talk about some stuff here that I forgot to say in Vlog 33.

One of the things I forgot to mention was that Chrome Sparks has its own Soundclick account! It just has the 5 Riff Ideas for now (I haven’t officially recorded Riff Ideas #6 or #7 yet, aside from Lost Vlog 07), but I’ll be recording some new material when I get new equipment in San Diego.

Unbeknownst to me at the time, Vlog 32 was actually released on my 4-year YouTube Anniversary and I forgot to talk about it!

I still can’t believe that it’s been four years since I signed up for YouTube! A lot has changed in that time, and I hope that the quality of my videos has gone up along with the times.

When I go to A-school in San Diego, I plan on getting an HD camcorder so that you guys can see me in HD as well as the surrounding areas. As I’ve said before, I’m also planning on continuing to vlog while I’m in the Navy as much as I can and hopefully let you guys in on the scenery.

Well, it’s been fun looking back on these past four years. Here’s to many more!

Lost Vlog 07 – Chrome Sparks’ Riff Ideas #6 and #7 (Demo)

Because of the lack of vlogs for this week, I’ve decided to make it up to you guys by doubling the size of this week’s Deja Vuesday!

Let’s kick things off with a look back two years ago, in 2007, when I was house-sitting for my folks:

Everyone should be here around 7 in the morning tomorrow so yeah, I want to hear about what they did in Florida this past week. From what I could make out from my conversations with my mom and bro, they stayed in the condo that we were in when we went to Disneyworld (well, not the same exact condo, but in the same condo area, whatever you wanna call it), went to Daytona Beach, and visited the Orlando Guitar Center.

I was jealous of my family going to Florida for the week without me, but it was also nice to get out of my cousin’s stressful house for awhile. This also led to me moving back home shortly after they came back from Florida. I didn’t move out again until June of 2009 when I moved to Bowling Green. Unfortunately, that only lasted a couple of months when I was forced out of my apartment in late August and moved back in with my parents yet again. Because of the move, I had once again become jobless and I’ve been looking for work ever since. Fun-fun…

This week’s been fun, despite not doing anything with my friends since they have a play that they’re involved it (Ben’s in it and Eric’s filming it), but hey, they have their own lives and I can’t be selfish with their time. I mostly stayed at the house when I wasn’t working and went out occasionally, usually to Wal-Mart or the gas station or something like that. It was fun to get away from the noise of where I live. Although I’m grateful to my cousin for letting me stay at his house free of charge, I’m getting the urge to go elsewhere. It could be due to living with other people, the berserk dog (she loves me, but she’s very annoying), or just that sense of “it’s time to move out on your own” that’s compelling me to move out.

However, I cannot do that just yet. If my parents agree to cosign loans to pay off my debt to UU and loans to get me into UU, then I can finish college and fulfill one of my life’s dreams: to visit and teach English in Japan. Although I probably won’t teach for an especially long time, it will help me learn Japanese culture and in turn, learn more about myself. It may seem like an unlucrative dream, but as with all matters of the heart, it just feels like the right thing to do. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I feel like I’ve come a long way since I graduated high school in 2004 (going on 4 years!!!!). I feel that I’ve substantially grown as a person, and I’ve learned from the mistakes of my parents and my own mistakes. I realize that if I continue to sit idly by and not apply myself to anything, then I’ll end up like my aunt and dad; eternally stuck in a prison of self-doubt without the key of self-discipline to open the door of opportunity and escape. The lesson became painfully clear when I was suspended both times from UU, and after picking up the pieces of myself, I vowed to hang in there if I would ever be able to go back no matter how rough things got. Also, I know what is expected of me and I plan on living up to those expectations. Of course, this will all amount to nothing if I’m not given the chance to go back to UU and prove myself. In seeking the wisdom of people who’ve been in a situation similar to mine, I’ve learned that I shouldn’t worry about failure because it’s a natural part of learning. Think of it this way: if you had given up trying to walk because you’d been falling on your butt everytime, then you’d be carted around in a wheelchair for the rest of your life. No offense to those who really can’t walk, but I’m positive that even they will sympathize when I say that it would be pathetic for someone who’s perfectly capable of walking to just give up because he fell on his butt a couple times. So if you think you haven’t a shred of self-discipline, just stand up and walk.

Wow, I really went off on a tangent there, didn’t I? Oh, I forgot to mention in that big, scary paragraph that if I can go back to UU that I want to minor in English. When the top English professor on campus recommends this, it’s a sure sign to follow through. Like I said before, my plans after I graduate college is to teach English in Japan. After that, well, it’s for me to discover for myself. Whether it’s in music, computers, teaching, or something completely different, I’m sure I’ll find myself when I live in Japan.

Yeah, my parents aren’t gonna cosign shit for me anymore. I know now that if I want to go to college and then Japan, I have to do it all by myself. This is why I’m going to look into taking online courses after I turn 24 and then transferring to another college that has a study-abroad program that will let me study in Japan. If I have to be in a certain year to study abroad, and some colleges require that students interested in studying abroad must be in their junior or senior year, then I’ll continue to take classes online until I’m at that level. I’ll also take advantage of any Japanese courses that are available.

Although I said that it would be unlikely that I’ll be moving to Michigan, I’m starting to warm up to the idea since my cousin and her boyfriend are beginning to find job opportunities in the area. Also, the apartment that we’ll be living in is owned by his grandparents so we’ll have some flexibility when dealing with the landlords.

In other news, I’ve been practicing scales and sometimes modes this week and I’m doing pretty good if I do say so myself. I’ve also been debating on what amp half-stack to buy when I get the money to do so. I could buy a Marshall MG100HDFX full stack for around $850. Even though the half-stack, which goes for around $599, is Musician’s Friend’s best selling amp period, it’s a solid-state amp which is a big strike against it. The Peavey Valveking half-stack goes for the price of $899 (I couldn’t find it as a full-stack). It’s an all-tube amp, which means that it’ll have a much better and louder sound (usually). The only drawbacks I could see are the lack of a full-stack option (which could be remedied by buying another Valveking cabinet) and the channel switch is sold separatly (I think the Marshall’s the same way, but I dunno). As with any amp, I won’t know for certain if I should buy it until I try it out for myself.

Man, I haven’t touched a guitar in a couple of weeks and it feels awful! With the majority of my time devoted to looking for a job and to blogging and vlogging, I had to cut back on my guitar playing. I really need to practice so I don’t become rusty! Since I’ll only be able to use the internet from McDonald’s, I’ll focus on my guitar playing in the meantime. Who knows, maybe you guys will get a new Riff Idea courtesy of Chrome Sparks? Keep your eyes peeled!

A Note From Dad Before The Concert

This blog entry take me back to 2008, just one year ago, when I discovered a note that my dad had written to me before I went to my very first concert:

My brother was rummaging through our late dad’s briefcase earlier today. He found an old letter that Dad wrote to me. According to the date, which I have provided, it was written before my first concert with Paul McCartney when I was just seven years old.

As I read it, on Halloween no less, I had a strange feeling that he read my mind from beyond the grave. All my worries and “What if?” questions that have been racing through my head since he passed in 2004 seemed to vanish.

There have been times in my life when I wondered if Dad really wanted me to create music. He didn’t teach me guitar because, according to Mom, he didn’t have the patience. He was a little leery when I asked him if I should buy a Legend of Zelda ocarina or a Game Boy Advance. I went with the GBA, but sometimes I wish I had an ocarina, no matter how annoying it would sometimes sound. Although this letter doesn’t let me see much of Dad the guitar player, it gives me a good look at Dad the musician. I now feel certain that relearning how to play guitar (I started out when I was seven, but didn’t pick it up again until I was nineteen) was something that Dad would wholeheartedly approve of.

In copying this letter, I decided to type everything as it was, bad and strange grammar included. So here it is, a note from Dad:

I’m very excited for you, also that you are going to see Paul McCartney. How ever if I could not go together as a family, and enjoy his beautiful music together, I find myself saying something that, well it’s just hard to say, but the memories of the evening in which your mother (with Jon inside of her) and I saw him several years ago. Well let’s just say they were, at least to me, very private and very special and they were memories I shall never forget…In this way my son please try to understand that without you guys (your mother included) even Paul McCartney is really no big deal to me. “BUT” the best wishes and also may you truely enjoy your very first concert a much as possiable OK…Great choice by the way, concert wise I mean picking the “BEST” to see first time out, “GREAT CHOICE”…I hope Mommy makes it a very very special evening for you that you will never forget. Enjoy music “always,” my beautiful child, because if you are ever wondering, “What did, or do I have in common with “MY FATHER”? Well one thing for sure is “MUSIC”…I love you, and will always love you Andy…Don’t ever think any other way. Maybe you could do what has been working and helping to bridge the many miles which for now separate us, sing a song, or songs, or listen to various tapes & CD’s, and I think you will find how small the world’s problems really are, and you may also find HOPE, LOVE, PEACE and most of all “LOVE” I did and still to this day love to play or just listen to music…However I find many groups and many songs very hard to listen to, they bring back memories of times long ago and so far away. So enjoy the concert, I wish I could be there with you guys to see Paul McCartney but things being as they are I can’t, and I’m truley “sorry” about that! Wow! Just wow!

Reading only a little bit of this entry literally brings a tear to my eye! It makes me feel like I had done the right thing in pursuing my journey into creating music, in addition to rediscovering the joys in playing guitar. There’s really not much that I can comment on or add to this post just because I think that it’s perfect the way it is, which is why I chose it for this week’s Deja Vuesday. Besides being one of my all-time favorite posts to read, it has also been one of you guys’ favorites too, judging from the post’s ratings. Thank-you!

Friday was a very productive day for me. I uploaded Riff Idea #5 to the Chrome Sparks MySpace page and uploaded Vlog 23 as well. I love how Riff Idea #5 turned out with the noise cancelling, but Vlog 23 ended up looking weird.

You see, some time ago, my copy of Sony Vegas decided to ignore the audio from the raw MP4 files from my Sanyo Xacti CG6 camera so I would end up with video but no audio when I would try to edit the file. At first, I had Total Video Converter convert my MP4 file into a WAV, rendered the audioless MP4 with the WAV into an AVI file via Sony Vegas, edit that, and render it as an MP4 file with audio. That worked fine, but I was beginning to run out of room on my laptop’s hard drive so I looked for another way. I then got Total Video Converter to convert my raw MP4 files into MPEG files, edited those with Sony Vegas, and rendered the edited file into an MP4 complete with audio. Although the volume was raised doing it that way, it would put a giant letterbox around the whole video, which I thought was incredibly tacky. I then switched from converting the raw MP4 files to MPEGs to converting the raw MP4s into a high quality H264 AVI file, which has been working just fine for me so far if the Paramore CD review and my behind-the-scenes look inside TheAndySan.com are any indications.

This one was quite a surprise! On Sunday, I found out that my old Geocities website was still up, although all of the images weren’t working so it looked like a jumbled wire frame. I’m sure there are a couple of updates that weren’t on there, but at least it bridges the gap between when I created my first website via Geocities in 2004 and when I started to blog on Xanga in 2006. It’s interesting to look at not only my early writing style, but what I was doing back then as well. I talked about, among other things, my time in ITT Tech and the old Yu-Gi-Oh! tournaments ran by Eriopolis that I used to be in.

I ended up not going out to fill out applications because I have very little gas, but I did apply to a couple places online. Other than that and uploading two videos to YouTube, I didn’t do much on Wednesday.

I did watch the new episodes of MythBusters and South Park. I loved how in this duck-tape-themed episode of MythBusters, pretty much all of the myths were confirmed. The new South Park episode wasn’t as funny as I thought it was gonna be; after all, it is the season premiere and it should start off the new season strong. I’m not saying it was bad; it just wasn’t that good.

On the MP3, I plugged my Dean Exotica Rosewood Supreme acoustic into my Behringer Ultra Chorus and into my uber-crappy Johnson Reptone 15 amp in order to add an extra bit of depth and character to my sound. I also turned myself away from the mic while I was recording and put the MP3 through a low-pass and high-pass filter in order to eliminate that tubby sound I was getting from some of the chords, but it ended up sounding thin and brittle.

Here however, I’m just playing the acoustic guitar. In fact, I prefer the sound of my camera’s mic to the mic on my laptop, which is what I used to record Riff Idea #1-4.

I’ve got some new Riff Ideas coming your way soon as well as my 100th video celebration! It’s hard to believe that I’m at the 100 video mark, even though I’ve been an official member of YouTube since May 1st 2006 (and an unregistered member as far back as late 2005), which is a helluva lot longer than even the majority of famous YouTubers!

How To Play Chrome Sparks’ Riff Idea #3

This vlog was originally suppose to be Vlog 16, but I decided to rerecord it because the room was too dark. Thankfully, I didn’t delete it because I talk about some cool stuff

In this video, I talk about my new goal board, different guitars that I want, and I show you some of the changes that I did to the apartment since my tour video.

At this point, I haven’t yet propped up my mini-fridge with two pieces of wood. They were originally shelves that I got from an entertainment center that was being thrown away nearby.

On my goal boards, I have the following goals/intentions:

“I am grateful for owning a Peavey Vypyr 75.”

“I am in a relationship with a beautiful woman.”

At the time, I was saving up for a PRS SE Custom 24 in Whale Blue and had around $60. Before I had to suddenly move back with my folks, I had amassed $134.02 total. Keep in mind that I got all this strictly from tips and all of the change in my wallet left over at the end of the day as well as some change found lying around. However, I did keep eight quarters (that’s $2 for my international audience) in my wallet just in case.

Besides the PRS, I want to own The Dean From Hell, a Jackson Kelly, a Jackson Kelly Star (think of a Kelly fusing with a Randy Rhoads asymmetrical V), and a Carvin V220 (which is quite the unique instrument indeed).

The Jackson Kelly and the Carvin V220 were both used by Marty Friedman when he was in Megadeth and Cacophony respectively. I tried unsuccessfully to get his signature Ibanez SZ model, of which there are two versions: one in blue with two humbuckers and another in red with a single humbucker and a killswitch instead of a volume knob. Do I really have to say which one I wanted? *it’s the blue one*

I have already recorded a video showing how to play Chrome Sparks’ Riff Idea #3, but I still need to edit it first because it’s a bit long as it is, around 14 minutes and 14 seconds long to be exact. A new Chrome Sparks vlog has been recorded and is set to be edited soon. I still have several vlogs in the editing room though (read: three unedited vlogs on my desktop) so it might take some time, but it will be out soon, I promise! I’m shooting for sometime this coming week.

Oh wow, where to start? Hmm, how about being tagged in FOUR stalker lists on Facebook? Despite the name, stalker list is just another online questionnaire asking you to list 20 or so people that you’re friends with on Facebook that don’t comment on your profile or comment very little. Yeah, Gmail was down for awhile on Monday, which means worldwide catastrophe every second someone can’t get their email from Google. You can read all about it thanks to Wired.com.

Parker Lewis Can’t Lose has got to be one of the most addicting shows of its time!! Methinks someone should adjust their Amazon Wish List this year!

While living on my own at BG, I maintained a weight of 210 lbs, which is pretty impressive considering that I ate mostly take-out food or microwavables. I guess the stress of losing my apartment and my job and moving back in with the ‘rents was enough to throw me off and thus, I gained 7.4 lbs. Yikes!! The good news is that it’s still warm enough to go biking. The bad news is that the pollen count’s too high to go biking. Fuck my life…

Lost Vlog 3 – How I Spent My 4th Of July In 2009

Now that I have your attention...

In this week’s Deja Vuesday, we take a look back 3 years ago to when I celebrated my 100th post.

Welcome one and all to The Andy-San’s 100th Post Celebration Extravaganza!!!! (ctrl+c’ed because I’m lazy). Wow it’s been 100 posts already. Some life I have eh? But anyway, on to the goodies. I’ve uploaded a new profile pic in celebration (I’m eating mint chocolate chip ice cream although you can’t see any of it). I’ve also made a new MySpace Band site involving my newest project (it’s been bouncing around for months). The band’s name is “The ReDeath No. 7″. Ooh, The ReDeath No. 7, how I miss thee. For those of you who weren’t around during that time, The ReDeath No. 7 was my J-Pop and J-Rock cover band project that came and went as fast as I had announced it.

I was gonna unvail my first Xanga videoblog but due to technical difficulties (a lack of a webcam that can capture footage and sound at the same time), it’ll have to wait until another time. But on with the good news!

I’ve now received word that I’m able to go to Urbana and move in this Sunday at noon. The thing is that I must take Wee-Todd English because I have no English credits from ITT Tech. I’ve informed Wal-Mart that I’m leaving and they’re quite sad to see me go. I can’t transfer to another Wal-Mart because I haven’t been there for 6 months or more. Oh well I can get another job down there easy. And besides, Wal-Mart’s Open Availability Policy (it means that I am available to come in anytime between 6 AM and 11 PM) would make college impossible. So the tentative schedule will be; Fri: work and return cable modem (no Internets till Urbana), Sat: move all the stuff I’m not taking to college down to the basement and then go school shopping like a crazy mofo and use/abuse my discount card one last time, Sun: move in and get a feel for the place etc etc. Sad to say that this will be my last post from my home for a while. Oh well, I’ll see if I can save up for a laptop and look for WiFi hotspots during the breaks.

When I go back to college, I’ll also have to take Wee-Todd English because my credits from UU won’t be coming with me. When will that be? I plan on going back early next year.

After picking up supper last night, I’m sooo glad that I don’t work at Wal-Mart anymore. Just about every cashier that checks me out is one snid comment away from blowing shit up. Maybe they need to find another job and/or another way to make money that will make better use of their talents and be more aligned with their goals. Or maybe I need to pay attention to which cashiers I go to next time, cuz I sure do attract some suicidals.

In other news, I’ve run into everyone at work that I haven’t seen in ages (I half expected my dearly departed dad to show up at Wal-Mart). I’ve seen my aunt and little cousin (yes, that aunt), my 5th grade teacher Mr. G, and a bunch of other people that I can’t remember now because my short-term memory is crap today (and I’m not on drugs, really I’m not). I even got pwn’d by a senior citizen on counting the correct amount of change after he handed me some more after I punched in what he gave me (if that made any sense at all).

Sometimes when I’m at work, my short-term memory just takes a crap on me. That’s why I write ALL of the orders down, unless it’s one or two items, and even then I’ll still write them down if they’re complicated.

Well it’s been a blast celebrating 100 posts and here’s to many more! I’m gonna go watch some Mahoromatic so good-night and godspeed!!!

I think that it’s been refreshing to take a look back at a year that wasn’t 2008, haha! The reason that I haven’t been covering 2006 and 2007 as much is because I was really depressed during those years, and since moving out, the focus of that depression has been rendered moot.
