Today, I’d like to talk about how I first came to YouTube and how I’m currently using it.

Around late 2004-early 2005 when I was still in college, my friends and I would browse around site like Fugly, KillSomeTime, and eBaumsWorld to watch funny video clips as well as pictures. They were basically like the YouTube of their day, but minus the vloggers.

When Lazy Sunday exploded all over the internet, we discovered YouTube. At that point, we just added it to our list of sites to browse around for funny clips. It wasn’t until around 2006 that I began watching people like TokyoCooney, RodgerSwan, and SxePhil. I then wanted to get involved with the community so I signed up for my own YouTube account on March 1st 2006.

Although I had already posted some videos, it wasn’t until I got my own camera in September 2008 that I really began to do stuff, and I’ve been putting out videos ever since.

Well, that’s pretty much it for now. Like I said in the video, more new stuff is on the way (including more Navy videos) so stay tuned. Peace!

It seems like ages since I last made a vlog, so I decided to do a quick one to explain the status of my various video series as well as what’s been going on recently.

It’s been a great experience working with my best bud Eriopolis on the Movie Night series, and I hope that we’ll continue to make more videos together!!

Until I started working on the Movie Night and Life In… series, I haven’t really sat down and watched my videos that much. A lot of them seemed stuck to a certain point of time and there are a couple very early videos that I’m downright embarrassed about. The reason I still keep them up is to show my progression as not only a YouTuber, but as a person. Despite the overall badness of some of them, I still get warm feelings of nostalgia when I watch the videos that were taken back when I was still at UU! Ahh, memories…

But anyway, getting back to the subject at hand, several of my video series are in a state of flux at the moment. Let me just give you the short version of what’s going on:

J-Vid – Unless it’s for a collab or as a response to a popular video, I don’t have any plans to bring back the J-Vids as a regular series.

Life In… – Since I’m beginning to run out of interesting places to record in the local area, I might only have a couple more episodes of the Life In… series left before I move to San Diego. Once I move there and am able to do stuff, you can count on me bringing the series back in full force!

WAR – Because of the recent increase in views and interest from this series, I’ve been tinkering with the idea of bringing it back. I have a couple of excellent CDs in mind to review! There’s also the distinct possibility of doing a long-awaited anime review *audible gasp!*.

In conclusion, just stay tuned and I hope to be giving you guys some more awesome videos in the near future!

Vlog 37 – Video Status Report

Yesterday, I went up to Bowling Green (OH not KY) to pick up my last two checks from Myles Dairy Queen and decided on a whim to bring my camera.

Despite doubts that I would record anything at all, I ended up having so much recorded footage that I’m splitting this vlog into two parts.

Part One includes my supper at Chipotle with Eriopolis (I don’t think he’s been in an online video since a brief cameo in an Eights And Aces practice vid), my revised life plans, and my trip to Finders Records.

For those of you who haven’t experienced the awesome that is Chipotle, it’s essentially a high-end Taco Bell that’s right under an authentic Mexican restaurant both in quality and in price.

Although you can get sides like chips and salsa, I’d give it a pass since the burritos are plenty filling all by themselves. A fajita burrito plus a 21-oz drink (think the medium-size from McDonald’s) cost me slightly under $8. Pricey yes, but insanely delicious!!

I remember first going to Chipotle when I was attending UU. It was looking to be another boring weekend and Dan, Eriopolis, and I decided to liven it up by going to Sawmill Road in Dublin OH, which is home of the very first Wendy’s. I also bought my first Guitar World magazine and a Japanese to English – English to Japanese dictionary at the local Borders. Ahh, good times…

After telling Eriopolis about what I’m gonna do with my life, he gave me some advise to consider.

Even though it’ll be cheaper to live with my parents, I should focus on moving out as soon as I get a job and have the money to do so. I know my parents won’t let me stay here for too long and that if I stay, another senseless argument will get me kicked out again.

So, I’ve decided to revise the plan yet again to focus on the next 1-2 years instead of the next 3-5.

1 – Get a job in Celina

2 – Move out

3 – Go to Owens Community College online

4 – Get my 4-year degree at either the University of Findlay or Ohio Northern University.

After going over my 1-2 year life plan, I drove over to Finders, which is one of the biggest record stores that I’ve ever been to. They have a wide selection of CDs and DVDs, including some of the obscure things that I enjoy like Al Di Meola, Owl City, and Marty Friedman’s solo albums.

Part Two covers my brief jaunt in downtown Bowling Green (OH not KY) and then to Myles Dairy Queen.

Myles Dairy Queen has been in business for decades and it offers MANY different kinds of things that you won’t find at a normal Dairy Queen, all thanks to some legal loopholes. Not to mention that the owner, Chip Myles, has been running it for almost 40 years!!!! Join their unofficial Facebook group to keep on the up-and-up and to learn more about this far superior Dairy Queen!!

Well, it’s been fun gallivanting around Bowling Green (OH not KY), but all good things must come to an end. I sure enjoyed my brief time in Bowling Green (OH not KY), and I hope you enjoyed it too! Take care!

Vlog 21 – Life Plans Chipotle Finders & Goin’ Downtown To Myles Dairy Queen

Greetings everyone! After looking through the first Twitter Thursday Throwdown, I’ve decided to make three changes that you guys will certainly appreciate.

First, the Tweets will be in blockquotes. If you’re viewing this through a feed reader like my personal fav Google Reader, then the quoted text will be indented.

Second, I grouped the blocks of Tweets in chronological order from the oldest Tweet to the most recent. Although the blocks are in chronological order, the individual Tweets are not. If you read my previous TTT, you know that I covered a shift for someone at work and got a three-day weekend in exchange. Going to Guitar Center on a weekly basis is still fun, but their inventory doesn’t change as much as I thought it would so the novelty is beginning to wear off. I basically just go there to play a Paul Reed Smith SE Custom 22 in cherryburst plugged into a Peavey Vypyr 100-watt combo amp. I used to try out basically everything within reach, but I’ve found what works for me and stuck to it.

I felt fairly productive that day. I recorded Riff Idea #3 for the Chrome Sparks MySpace page, which was a riff that I had been working on since way back in my Xanga days. Back then, it was tentatively called The Garden. I did two takes of it and even had Ben Miller from Eights and Aces do one. Eriopolis, who is also Ben’s brother, mixed them together so they wouldn’t suck as bad, haha!

For the new recording, I tried my hand at low and high pass filtering with mixed results. I did it because on a certain part of the riff where I hit the acoustic strings hard, the sound comes out all woofy and distorted (in a bad way). It almost sounds like I have a wah pedal cocked while I’m playing some parts because the mids are so funky.

If anyone out there knows where I went wrong in mixing the riff, please leave me a comment. And don’t leave a smart-ass comment like “Well, you went wrong when you decided to pick up a guitar and attempt to play. Go back to working your minimum-wage job and stop posting crappy videos, you punk-ass!” I seem to be attracting those kind of comments ever since I posted videos on YouTube of me singing/slaughtering nine songs.

Listening to some new tracks by Owl City and watching old episodes of Kenan and Kel were just the things I needed right before going to bed!

When I bought my second wall scroll online, I was expecting one as big as my wall scroll of Rei Ayanami from Neon Genesis Evangelion, which is 31 x 43 inches. Instead, I got a dinky 21 x 15 inch one. Needless to say, I was quite unamused. However, I got over the situation and found the perfect spot for it; right smack on the inside of my bedroom door! Looking at it, I noticed that despite its small size, it’s very well detailed, more so than my other wall scroll. I’m not mad anymore that I got an unexpectedly smaller wall scroll; on the contrary, I think it suits the room just the way it is! The next time I buy a wall scroll, however, I’ll pay attention to the proportions.

After talking to Zack at the music store the day before about how often he changes his guitar strings, I realized that I have never changed the strings that were initially on my Dean Exotica Rosewood Supreme acoustic (not to name drop or anything, haha!) when I got it, and I’ve owned that guitar since my 22nd birthday (going on two years ago) when my mom paid it off for me as my de-facto birthday present. I had been slowly paying on it every other week for 3-4 months. Keep in mind that I was working at Andy’s Roadhouse at the time and would exhaust my check just to pay for the gas to get there and the food I ate on my breaks.

So after FINALLY changing the strings with a pack of Martins that I also got when my mom paid the guitar off, I went to fine clip the B string and I clipped too much off. Because it was too short, I couldn’t use it and had to throw it away and wait until morning to get a spare string from the music store, which I got for $1. After putting it on and making sure every string’s in tune, I properly clipped the excess off and had a blast playing my guitar!! I dunno why I didn’t do it sooner, but my guitar sounds even better than the day I first played it!!

Hey guys, I’m back after a long-ass hiatus!

I has a job now, and I’m actually making money with this one!

Since I’m making money again, I want to buy a degree online via InstantDegrees.com. A scam? Maybe, but it would still be nice to have.

I want to get my 4-year degree so that I can teach English in Japan.

I’ve been learning Japanese for awhile now so that I can be a more effective teacher. Also, being able to speak Japanese will open up more opportunities in Japan (liek zOMG, no wai!).

I’ve been watching several gaijin (foreigners) in Japan for some time in order to learn more about living and working in Japan.

Vlog 9 – Getting To Japan

While I visited my friends, I found a clip from Eights and Aces’ 7-12-2008 practice session that didn’t get put on the main video. I don’t know exactly why, but it’s probably because I didn’t have proper video editing software.

Eights and Aces BONUS Footage

Lately, I’ve been feeling introspective. I’m looking through the projects that I had a hand in. Things like Oof Da Kitty and Eights and Aces.

Oof Da Kitty – Experimental Rock Comedy At Its Best/Worst!

Here is some information on the band that was Oof Da Kitty:

(The Official ODK Bio on Myspace and last.fm) ODK, which is short for Oof Da Kitty, was the bandname for brothers Ben and Eric W. Miller’s early music. They were later joined by Eric’s friend Andy-San, who appeared on vocals for their debut album, “thE theoRy In miC.” After the completion of TTIM, they tried to come up with original material for their next album, “Be thE oNe”, but it ultimatly fell through. Andy-San recorded some very experimental songs in hopes to revive ODK but the brothers Miller were uninspired by them since they were parodies of existing songs. ODK has attempted numerous times to submit a song for the Dwelling of Duels competition, but have submitted nothing so far. Due to the first attempt backfiring, Andy-San was inspired to create “Trifecta (The Song of Nothing)”, a podcast initially to deliver an apology for not making a song, but evolved into something else entirely. This prompted two more rants, “Nothing Can Happen” and “We Call Him…Stabby [Gormak Is Invincible!!! (Cody's Grad Party)]“. Andy-San’s also remixed Trifecta twice. Since then, Ben has become the lead guitarist for his band called Short Fuse (formerly Identity Crisis). Eric steps in on vocals sometimes during jam sessions and is also the band’s unofficial gear technician. Andy-San runs the ODK MySpace and is working to become a guitarist and possibly vocalist in his own right. He also consistantly jams with Short Fuse. According to his blogs on ODK’s MySpace, Andy-San still wants ODK to rejoin and record some new tunes. Both of the Millers have agreed to do so, but only when someone submits an idea for an original song.

We’re not fond or rules and we have no respect the status quo. nor do we show ne respect for a man who hits a woman. Note 2 u : We c u do that u my as well start runnin 4 the hills, cuz theres a chamber deep inside the brain… it’s covered w/ chains so don’t b shakin it loose…and if u do,,, oof the hills head 4 the mountains!!!! We have no agenda, we do what we do because we want to and know nothing else. we’ve never felt so alone and at sametime we’ve never felt so alive. our lives is our minds and minds is our lives. These lives that we have now have givin us more than ne of us ever expected. but it’s hard to live in a world that is sinking more and more each day. It takes more that negativity to keep us down and block our path of ambition, desire and destiny. If u heard the story about or friend that got “deported” from london yes it was true. I’m not tellin the story because I need Austins Permission. If u wish 2 join us add us and we will decide whether u can or not by the way ne of u football jocks, don’t even try and get in!!

Yeah, I’ll admit, ODK’s music is a little rough. We didn’t have much back then. Hell, I had to piece together those songs with Windows Sound Maker, which could only record up to 60 seconds of audio at a time! I don’t even remember how I compiled it all. Oh, how I miss those days! Back when Ben had his cheap-o Esteban Midnight electric guitar (it was stolen from the music store somehow) that we plugged directly into the legendary karaoke machine along with a microphone. That machine had the deepest reverb/echo I’ve ever heard!! Spider-Dan, bitches!! Although, I still think that the demos that aren’t on ODK’s Myspace are better than the ones that are. I wish that ODK would come back! Knowing what we know now, I’m positive that we could make some better quality songs.

Eights and Aces – An All-American Band

When it comes to Eights and Aces, I still really wish I was in that band. What can I say, I love making music with my friends and would totally join them if they asked me to (and even if they didn’t ask me, hehe).

Here is their bio, as typed by me:

Eights and Aces are a group of friends that wanna kick ass and play music! Their first incarnation was Identity Crisis. After new bassist Cody joined to free up then-bassist/vocalist Ryan so he can just sing, they became Short Fuse. Short Fuse was short-lived however, and then was given new life as Eights and Aces.

*UPDATE on 8/1/2008!!!*
Because of the new, heavier direction that Eights and Aces wants to pursue, they have relieved Ryan of his singing duties. Eights and Aces is now looking for a new vocalist with a strong background in hard rock and heavy metal, a solid voice to match, and creative input. If you fulfill these requirements, please leave us a message here or call Ben’s cell at 419-953-0290 and we’ll set up an audition.

Currently, the band’s set-list consists of primarily cover songs with a few added originals.

They are currently on college hiatus. Come summer 2009, they’ll be accepting gigs and will play at any type of venue. If you are looking to book Eights and Aces, leave us a message and we’ll respond as soon as possible.

When they come back, I have a feeling they’re gonna come back as a different band.

Goofy (their singer) was fired before they went in hiatus for college in August. I also heard that Cody (their bassist) quit. I’m not sure about that one, but I am sure that they can get him to come back if he did quit.

When I join or form a band, I want to have people that I know, trust, and get along with as my bandmates. Talent and skill are nice to have, but they can be improved upon. It’s not that big of a deal to me if you’re not that good; unless you really really suck, hehe. If you’re working with players that you’re not compatible with, aside from going to therapy or something, it’s very unlikely that you’ll get along down the road.

Looking Back – A Reflection of Reflecting

I was kinda bored today so I decided to record some videos of me playing my acoustic. This video is of me doing the rhythm part of Heart Turned Black, one of Eights and Aces’ original songs. I fudged up a couple parts and played the whole thing way too fast, but it’s okay I guess. Enjoy!
