If I get a job, then I forfeit all that money. On the other hand, waiting for this money is pissing me off because I have to put up with everybody here at home and my friends haven’t even tried once to hang out with me ever since I moved back over three months ago. Today’s album review has been specially requested by Ben, one of my best friends. This week, I’m going over Atreyu’s newest release, Congregation of the Damned.

To be honest, I prefer music from the 80s-90s over what’s going on today. However, there have been several newer bands and artists that I’ve been really getting into: Owl City, Orianthi, housethegrate, and Atreyu just to name a few.

Atreyu’s previous release, Lead Sails Paper Anchors, was a good listen and well-received by the critics. Let’s find out how this new record stacks up:

Personal Backstory

I first heard Atreyu back in late 2007 when I was working at Andy’s Roadhouse and I often listened to the local heavy metal/rock radio station, 98.9 The Bear. Their breakout hit, Becoming The Bull, was played over and over and over and over again. It was great when I heard it the first couple of times, but because radio stations like to pummel listeners to the ground by replaying the same songs over and over and over and over again, Becoming The Bull got really old really quick.

Then, my bro Jon went out and bought Lead Sails Paper Anchors and I became quickly hooked to the song Falling Down. The opening drum-and-bass riff is so infectious it makes the Swine Flu look like a mild case of the sniffles.

I also found out that Dan Jacobs, one of Atreyu’s guitarists, has his own series of guitar instructional videos with Rock House. I checked out a couple of the free clips that Rock House put out on YouTube, and he’s a pretty well-schooled guitarist as well as an easy-going teacher.

The Track Breakdown

The first track, Stop! Before It’s Too Late and We’ve Destroyed It All, starts the record off strong with a Paul Gilbert-approved intro solo and goes into a throaty call to destruction.

The next song, Bleeding Is a Luxury, continues with the throat screams and makes me think of what a collaboration between Sixx AM and Avenged Sevenfold would sound like.

Congregation of the Damned, the title track of the album, gives the throaty shreiks a quick break with some great singing that doesn’t sound overdone.

Up next is Coffin Nails, a nicely-done emo-metal track. I know that emo is still regarded in the same way as goth was before the turn of the millenium, but for me, that doesn’t take away anything from a good song.

After that, it’s Black Days Begin, a Pantera-meets-Scorpions song that takes the excellent groove from both of these bands and adds a nice modern metal sound to it.

Gallows begins with a drumbeat straight outta Racer X’s Scarified and the opening guitar line is equally impressive! This has got to be my favorite track out of this album so far!

If Gallows is my favorite song on this CD, then the seventh track and the first single off this album, Storm To Pass, is an uncomfortably close second! The first vocal line in the chorus (Watching, waiting) is absolutely killer and the guitar work is noteworthy!

You Were the King, Now You’re Unconscious, the longest song on the album at 5 minutes and 8 seconds, begins with a Slayer-endorsed drum-then-pause drum line (think Raining Blood). It then goes into a sing-a-line-scream-a-line pattern that’s characteristic of today’s metal that’s carried throughout the rest of the song.

Insatiable, a hair-metal-meets-modern-metal song, is next on the disc. The vocal lines have enough CFCs in them to rip the ozone layer a new one and teaming with the crunch-and-punch guitar rhythms redefines the phrase “a world of hurt!”

Track 10 is So Wrong, another fiery modern metal track that’s also singleworthy. It starts off sounding like Iron Maiden and shifts between Staind’s quiet voice and throaty screams for the remainder of the song!

The next track, Ravenous, is a pretty straightforward thrash tune from the bowels of Hell. ‘Nuff said!

After that is Lonely, a tune reminiscent of Linkin Park and Fall Out Boy. Is this what FOB would sound like if they were a metal band? No, but it’s awful close.

Track 13 is Wait for You, which is the last of the regular tracks on this CD. It’s an approprietly-placed mellow wrap-up to the album that seems to be the oddball song in comparison to the metal onslaught from the previous 12 tracks. Is it just me or does this track remind you a little of the song Slip Out from the anime BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad?

Up next is Bravery, the first of the 3 bonus tracks. It fits in well with the other tracks with its sing-a-line-scream-a-line combo that Atreyu is so fond of.

We Are the Living Dead, the 15th track on this CD, is quite a screamer of a track! It should find a good home on metal radio stations around the globe, where it will pound listeners in the ear until they go running under their Hanna Montana blankets reciting lyrics from Jonas Brothers songs for comfort!

The 16th and final track on Congregation of the Damned is Another Night (Wishing I Wasn’t Here). It’s my favorite of the 3 bonus tracks and as a bonus track, it appropriatly bookmarks this album.

The Goodies, The Baddies & The Uglies

Looking at a behind-the-scenes sneak peek of this album in one of my Guitar World CD-ROMs, my expectations for the guitar work on this album was frightingly high! I’m happy to say that my expectations were well-met and if you dig modern metal rhythms mixed with bits of tasty 80s shred, you’ll dig it too!

One of the big gripes that I have with Congregation of the Damned is that it has the dreaded from-gut-to-throat-with-hate screams that are kissing cousins with Cookie Monster vocals in their overuse in today’s music. However, I think that Atreyu used them appropriately to accent a song instead of overwhelming it with pig roars, although some songs came close to overdoing it.

Another gripe of mine is that a lot of the rhythm tracks seem to be interchangable with other songs on this album. While some might like this kind of consistency, I however loved the interesting tidbits and then got bored listening to the same stuff played over and over and over and over again.

The Verdict

Despite the annoying vocal & rhythm guitar repetition and pig roars that threaten my sanity, Atreyu’s Congregation of the Damned scores big with some impressive guitar hooks and melodic vocal lines that give me a sense of hope in this generation of musicians!

Deja Vuesday: How Do I Start Blogging?

Alrighty boys and girls, it’s that time of the week when I take one of my older posts, dust it off real nice, and talk about how it relates to me today!

In this week’s Deja Vuesday, we’re going back a full year to 2008 when I received a question about how to make money online:

It All Started With A Question

My friend Adam asked me a question on FaceBook today. He asked:

“So I’ve seen quite a few people actually try to make some dough with blogs. Some succeeding.

I used to blog.. on Xanga.. but then everyone stopped doing it.. so I stopped doing it too.

If I could make 10-30 bucks a month.. that’d be sweet. So where do i start if i wanna make money with it? Give me some help dude. I wanna document the life and times of an aspiring jazz musician in acollege of music.”

Since I published this article, Adam has created his own blog and told me that he’s making around $20 in AdSense revenue. That’s pretty impressive considering that I’ve been writing articles for years and I only make around $37 a month. Then again, if I didn’t screw with AdSense back in the day, I’d be making more money, but c’est la vie…

Well Adam, that’s fairly easy, especially since you have a good topic (my problem is I can’t stick to one topic). If you want to get a good start as a blogger, purchase your own domain name. Sure, you could go through third-party blogs like MySpace, LiveJournal, Xanga, etc, but you’ll have the most freedom from purchasing your own domain name.

I use WordPress as my blog software. For hosting, I use DreamHost. It’s been pretty reliable so far.

When you’re thinking of a domain name, I’d go with something instantly recognizable and without numbers. For example, www.minording.com is available.

After you’ve settled on a domain name, go through a hosting company like DreamHost, BlueHost, Laughing Squid, etc. Make sure that they can do an auto-install of WordPress. That’s one of the major reasons I went through DreamHost is because they have one-click installs. Sure, I could install everything myself, but I want to make the whole process as efficient as possible so auto-installs are the way to go!

Once WordPress is installed, just follow the prompts to build your website & blog. Although I just have a blog on my website, WordPress can build an entire website as well as a blog.

WordPress has sure come a long way in only a year’s time! Now you can update it by going into the dashboard for WordPress instead of messing with DreamHost’s one-click installs every time it needs to update. I like using the one-click installs to put it up initially, but going back every single time WordPress issued an update was getting tedious.

What Are Your Visitors Doing?

One of the most important things to put up in your blog is Google Analytics. It give you a comprehensive overview of your website. It tells you where your visitors are coming from, how many you’re getting, everything. I can’t recommend it enough!

Seriously, this is critical! If I didn’t have any kind of analytics software, then I wouldn’t know how many people are visiting my website, what posts they’re reading the most, when they come here the most, etc. Without these statistics, I would have no clue as to what posts my readers like and when they like to read them.

Moving my update schedule from 10pm-12am EST to 1pm-5pm EST has seen an incredibly positive shift in the amount of viewers that I get. I still do nightly posts from time to time, but my main posts are done between 1pm and 5pm EST, mostly around 2pm EST.

How To Make Money, Money, Money!

Now as far as monetizing goes, the king in that regard is Google AdSense. Just follow the instructions and you should be good to go. Another service that’s been working great for me is Text Link Ads. If you have a PayPal account, I’d definitely put up a Donations button.

One way you could monetize your content is by going through a service like Associated Content. You can submit virtually anything in about any format (text, video, audio, picture, etc). If you choose to submit content that is Non-Exclusive (recommended), you can later submit it to your blog once it’s published on AC. This way, you get more content for your website AND you get paid for it via AC before it hits your website. It’s a win-win!

You have an excellent topic in hand (becoming a successful jazz musician). You have a variety of means in which you can add content to your site. You can give out lessons, either via text, pictures, or video (I’d recommend all three at once). Post some lessons on YouTube and embed them in your post. For pictures, I’d go through something like Flickr or Picasta or something like that and embed them into your post. You could post pictures of close-up hand positions, tabs, musical notation, etc.

In addition to posting lessons, you can also record your gigs. This not only gives your viewers your resume-of-sorts, but it can also help land you gigs if you get enough exposure. Just look at what it did for Tay Zonday aka the Chocolate Rain guy!

I would also post about your experiences and what you’ve learned from them. Experience is what makes the difference between learning from a book and learning in real life. It could be about gig disasters, meeting your heroes, making a difference in someone’s life through your music, etc.

Remember, the name of the game is exposure. The more you put yourself out there, the more possibilities and opportunities open themselves for you.

I haven’t used Associated Content at all since they rejected my review of Myself ; Yourself because they don’t pay for reviews anymore. I still use services like SocialSpark and PayPerPost whenever they ask me to do a post (like the two I did before this post). Text-Link-Ads is still my number-one moneymaker, pulling in over $37 every month. I’m beginning to get back into using Amazon Associates by tying it in with my reviews. So far, I’ve sold one CD (it was Orianthi’s Believe album) and I think I’ll continue to use Amazon Associates like this, but I’m gonna skip the banners and all that stuff.

How Monetization Really Works

Adam then asks:

“Yeah. So like you did calculating.. how many hits/clicks would I need for like.. 300 bucks or something.. an estimate.”

It varies a lot. It all depends on what keywords are clicked, how many clicks you get, how many visitors you get, etc. One click could range from a penny to a dollar to five dollars to more. For example, somebody clicked on one of my text link ads and I got $5 from it. Another text link ad got me $1.05. Going from my examples, you would need between 60-286 clicks to generate $300. If you’re pulling in the traffic, this is an easy task. That’s kind of where I’m at right now; I’m building content, seeing what connects with people and what doesn’t, and slowly building a following (I’m averaging 28 visitors a day).

After blogging for over five years, I’m still learning how to monetize my website. There’s new programs and different monetization methods coming out all the time, and I’m always doing research on what the next big thing in online money-making is gonna be, as well as how my viewers react to such changes on my website and individual posts.

I’m also still building traffic and an online rapport. It’s weird to think that some of my YouTube viewers think I’m an up-and-comer, even though I’ve been around a lot longer than pretty much every e-celebrity except Fred (May 1st, 2006 is when I officially joined YouTube, although I’ve been browsing around it since the early days back in 2005).

Express Yourself

To be perfectly honest, I wouldn’t focus a lot on the making money part until you have at least a month’s worth of content. That’s not to say that you can’t immediately monetize it; it’s just so much easier to make money when you have something on the table to offer people.

These things generally take time to build up the traffic and the money, but the payoff is well worth it because although I only average 28 daily visitors, it feels good to know that 28 people took time out of whatever they were doing to read and/or watch what I’m doing.

Bottom line: be creative and be yourself. Sure, I use an online nickname (TheAndySan), but I use that to differentiate myself from all the other Andys and AndySans and whatnot.

If you have any more questions, feel free to leave me an email (my email address is at the very top of this page). Good luck!

TheAndySan

Yeah, I still get around an average of 28 daily visitors, but I’m also working on building my online presence on other websites like Twitter and YouTube and Facebook. With my anime/album reviews and my Japanese videos, I’m sure that I’ll be getting more viewers in no time. The more viewers I get, the closer that I can be to doing this full-time without having to live with my parents or being homeless.

Well, it’s been fun looking back at one of my really good posts, but it’s time for me to go eat some lunch. See you guys tomorrow when I review Atreyu’s latest album, The Congregation of the Damned! Don’t miss it!!

Deja Vuesday Double Feature: "I Was Made To Hit In Japan!!1" and "A Note From Dad Before The Concert"

Because of the lack of vlogs for this week, I’ve decided to make it up to you guys by doubling the size of this week’s Deja Vuesday!

Let’s kick things off with a look back two years ago, in 2007, when I was house-sitting for my folks:

I Was Made To Hit In Japan!!1

Evenin’, it’s the Andy-San again relaxin’ at my parents’ home

Everyone should be here around 7 in the morning tomorrow so yeah, I want to hear about what they did in Florida this past week. From what I could make out from my conversations with my mom and bro, they stayed in the condo that we were in when we went to Disneyworld (well, not the same exact condo, but in the same condo area, whatever you wanna call it), went to Daytona Beach, and visited the Orlando Guitar Center.

I was jealous of my family going to Florida for the week without me, but it was also nice to get out of my cousin’s stressful house for awhile. This also led to me moving back home shortly after they came back from Florida. I didn’t move out again until June of 2009 when I moved to Bowling Green. Unfortunately, that only lasted a couple of months when I was forced out of my apartment in late August and moved back in with my parents yet again. Because of the move, I had once again become jobless and I’ve been looking for work ever since. Fun-fun…

This week’s been fun, despite not doing anything with my friends since they have a play that they’re involved it (Ben’s in it and Eric’s filming it), but hey, they have their own lives and I can’t be selfish with their time. I mostly stayed at the house when I wasn’t working and went out occasionally, usually to Wal-Mart or the gas station or something like that. It was fun to get away from the noise of where I live. Although I’m grateful to my cousin for letting me stay at his house free of charge, I’m getting the urge to go elsewhere. It could be due to living with other people, the berserk dog (she loves me, but she’s very annoying), or just that sense of “it’s time to move out on your own” that’s compelling me to move out.

However, I cannot do that just yet. If my parents agree to cosign loans to pay off my debt to UU and loans to get me into UU, then I can finish college and fulfill one of my life’s dreams: to visit and teach English in Japan. Although I probably won’t teach for an especially long time, it will help me learn Japanese culture and in turn, learn more about myself. It may seem like an unlucrative dream, but as with all matters of the heart, it just feels like the right thing to do. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I feel like I’ve come a long way since I graduated high school in 2004 (going on 4 years!!!!). I feel that I’ve substantially grown as a person, and I’ve learned from the mistakes of my parents and my own mistakes. I realize that if I continue to sit idly by and not apply myself to anything, then I’ll end up like my aunt and dad; eternally stuck in a prison of self-doubt without the key of self-discipline to open the door of opportunity and escape. The lesson became painfully clear when I was suspended both times from UU, and after picking up the pieces of myself, I vowed to hang in there if I would ever be able to go back no matter how rough things got. Also, I know what is expected of me and I plan on living up to those expectations. Of course, this will all amount to nothing if I’m not given the chance to go back to UU and prove myself. In seeking the wisdom of people who’ve been in a situation similar to mine, I’ve learned that I shouldn’t worry about failure because it’s a natural part of learning. Think of it this way: if you had given up trying to walk because you’d been falling on your butt everytime, then you’d be carted around in a wheelchair for the rest of your life. No offense to those who really can’t walk, but I’m positive that even they will sympathize when I say that it would be pathetic for someone who’s perfectly capable of walking to just give up because he fell on his butt a couple times. So if you think you haven’t a shred of self-discipline, just stand up and walk.

Wow, I really went off on a tangent there, didn’t I? Oh, I forgot to mention in that big, scary paragraph that if I can go back to UU that I want to minor in English. When the top English professor on campus recommends this, it’s a sure sign to follow through. Like I said before, my plans after I graduate college is to teach English in Japan. After that, well, it’s for me to discover for myself. Whether it’s in music, computers, teaching, or something completely different, I’m sure I’ll find myself when I live in Japan.

Yeah, my parents aren’t gonna cosign shit for me anymore. I know now that if I want to go to college and then Japan, I have to do it all by myself. This is why I’m going to look into taking online courses after I turn 24 and then transferring to another college that has a study-abroad program that will let me study in Japan. If I have to be in a certain year to study abroad, and some colleges require that students interested in studying abroad must be in their junior or senior year, then I’ll continue to take classes online until I’m at that level. I’ll also take advantage of any Japanese courses that are available.

Although I said that it would be unlikely that I’ll be moving to Michigan, I’m starting to warm up to the idea since my cousin and her boyfriend are beginning to find job opportunities in the area. Also, the apartment that we’ll be living in is owned by his grandparents so we’ll have some flexibility when dealing with the landlords.

In other news, I’ve been practicing scales and sometimes modes this week and I’m doing pretty good if I do say so myself. I’ve also been debating on what amp half-stack to buy when I get the money to do so. I could buy a Marshall MG100HDFX full stack for around $850. Even though the half-stack, which goes for around $599, is Musician’s Friend’s best selling amp period, it’s a solid-state amp which is a big strike against it. The Peavey Valveking half-stack goes for the price of $899 (I couldn’t find it as a full-stack). It’s an all-tube amp, which means that it’ll have a much better and louder sound (usually). The only drawbacks I could see are the lack of a full-stack option (which could be remedied by buying another Valveking cabinet) and the channel switch is sold separatly (I think the Marshall’s the same way, but I dunno). As with any amp, I won’t know for certain if I should buy it until I try it out for myself.

Well, I should get ready for bed. Good-night everyone!

Andy-San

Man, I haven’t touched a guitar in a couple of weeks and it feels awful! With the majority of my time devoted to looking for a job and to blogging and vlogging, I had to cut back on my guitar playing. I really need to practice so I don’t become rusty! Since I’ll only be able to use the internet from McDonald’s, I’ll focus on my guitar playing in the meantime. Who knows, maybe you guys will get a new Riff Idea courtesy of Chrome Sparks? Keep your eyes peeled!

A Note From Dad Before The Concert

This blog entry take me back to 2008, just one year ago, when I discovered a note that my dad had written to me before I went to my very first concert:

Editor’s Note: this entry was originally written on Halloween of 2008.

My brother found an old note my late dad wrote to me before I went to my first concert with Paul McCartney when I was seven years old.

My brother was rummaging through our late dad’s briefcase earlier today. He found an old letter that Dad wrote to me. According to the date, which I have provided, it was written before my first concert with Paul McCartney when I was just seven years old.

As I read it, on Halloween no less, I had a strange feeling that he read my mind from beyond the grave. All my worries and “What if?” questions that have been racing through my head since he passed in 2004 seemed to vanish.

There have been times in my life when I wondered if Dad really wanted me to create music. He didn’t teach me guitar because, according to Mom, he didn’t have the patience. He was a little leery when I asked him if I should buy a Legend of Zelda ocarina or a Game Boy Advance. I went with the GBA, but sometimes I wish I had an ocarina, no matter how annoying it would sometimes sound. Although this letter doesn’t let me see much of Dad the guitar player, it gives me a good look at Dad the musician. I now feel certain that relearning how to play guitar (I started out when I was seven, but didn’t pick it up again until I was nineteen) was something that Dad would wholeheartedly approve of.

In copying this letter, I decided to type everything as it was, bad and strange grammar included. So here it is, a note from Dad:

Before The Concert: A Note From Dad

I’m very excited for you, also that you are going to see Paul McCartney. How ever if I could not go together as a family, and enjoy his beautiful music together, I find myself saying something that, well it’s just hard to say, but the memories of the evening in which your mother (with Jon inside of her) and I saw him several years ago. Well let’s just say they were, at least to me, very private and very special and they were memories I shall never forget…In this way my son please try to understand that without you guys (your mother included) even Paul McCartney is really no big deal to me. “BUT” the best wishes and also may you truely enjoy your very first concert a much as possiable OK…Great choice by the way, concert wise I mean picking the “BEST” to see first time out, “GREAT CHOICE”…I hope Mommy makes it a very very special evening for you that you will never forget. Enjoy music “always,” my beautiful child, because if you are ever wondering, “What did, or do I have in common with “MY FATHER”? Well one thing for sure is “MUSIC”…I love you, and will always love you Andy…Don’t ever think any other way. Maybe you could do what has been working and helping to bridge the many miles which for now separate us, sing a song, or songs, or listen to various tapes & CD’s, and I think you will find how small the world’s problems really are, and you may also find HOPE, LOVE, PEACE and most of all “LOVE” I did and still to this day love to play or just listen to music…However I find many groups and many songs very hard to listen to, they bring back memories of times long ago and so far away. I really enjoy songs of hope of things that could be, or just possibilities type songs. I really love those beautiful “LOVE SONGS” they mean the most to me. So enjoy the concert, I wish I could be there with you guys to see Paul McCartney but things being as they are I can’t, and I’m truley “sorry” about that! Above all always have “fun” while you are listening to his music, I will be right beside in spirit O.K.!!! Love you Dad!

Wow! Just wow!

Reading only a little bit of this entry literally brings a tear to my eye! It makes me feel like I had done the right thing in pursuing my journey into creating music, in addition to rediscovering the joys in playing guitar. There’s really not much that I can comment on or add to this post just because I think that it’s perfect the way it is, which is why I chose it for this week’s Deja Vuesday. Besides being one of my all-time favorite posts to read, it has also been one of you guys’ favorites too, judging from the post’s ratings. Thank-you!

I hope that you’ve enjoyed a look back into my blogging past, and that you will join me as we move ever closer to the bright and shiny future!

P.S: Just a quick reminder, as I had said in the beginning of this post, I won’t be posting videos this week and I’m unsure about this week’s Twitter Thursday Throwdown as well. Don’t worry, as I plan on going all-out next week with two WARs and two Japanese videos! I’m going to be working on them offline throughout this week. Stay tuned!!

Vlog 25 – The Condition of My Condition

If you can’t see the above video, click here.

*Editor’s Note: This vlog was recorded the day before so my mom’s birthday was on the 7th and not the 8th.*

Before I begin, I’d like to wish my mom a happy birthday!!

For this vlog, I decided to go on a short bike ride yesterday since the weather was nice and I had been going through bouts of cabin fever.

The eBay auction for our TV didn’t sell, although it did do better than before. We’re just gonna put up flyers for it and things like that.

My job situation is looking grim, thanks to not only the already crappy economy, but to the upcoming winter season. There are some temp positions available that I’ll be looking into this week.

In Vlog 23, I said that I’d be moving to Michigan in January with my cousin and her boyfriend. However, due to the stupid-high unemployment rate in Michigan among other concerns, I doubt that I’ll be going. I’m still gonna keep this option open just in case something were to happen with me and my stepdad.

So far we’re on good terms, but who knows when he’ll get pissed at me and throw me out again over something asinine. I’d like to have a backup plan for when that happens.

The unemployment office hasn’t contacted me yet on when the over-the-phone hearing will be, but I did receive a letter from them several weeks ago saying that it will happen and that they’ll send me another letter saying when it’ll happen.

With that kind of money, I’ll be able to move elsewhere to look for work. One such locale that I’m thinking about is California, specifically Orange County since their unemployment rate (around 9.2%) is one of the lowest in the state. I want to move out there because I’m tired of Ohio’s frigid climate. I want to be somewhere where the weather’s consistently warm with a body of water nearby. Are any of you living in or have lived in California? Tell me about your experiences in the comments below!

Despite getting kicked out of my apartment in Bowling Green, I’m still glad that I had that experience. It taught me a lot about myself, in that it helped me figure out a proper food budget that I couldn’t do having never lived on my own before.

It also showed me what kind of foods that I enjoy. Even though I ate mostly fast food and other stuff that was bad for me, I also ate healthy stuff like apples and drank cranberry juice in the form of Cranergy, which made my weight remain fairly consistent. I was still overweight, but at least I didn’t gain much weight before losing it. Since I moved back home, I’ve gained a lot of weight (I think I’m up to 220 lbs now) mostly due to physical inactivity instead of poor eating habits (although they do play a part in it too). I’m looking forward to moving out so that way I can start eating healthier and lose all this extra crap!

This week, my weekly Japanese video and album review might not be uploaded because my stepdad will be home around that time and he doesn’t like when I’m on the internet. I’ll still record them sometime this week, but in this case, I’ll be uploading two videos on Monday and Wednesday of the following week to make up for no videos this coming week.

It’s kind of a good thing because I’m not really sure what I’ll be doing with my upcoming 2 Japanese videos and I still need to write out the CD review that I have in mind. The online downtime will also give my poor addled brain a much-needed break.

Well, I’m going to be going to bed soon so I’ll see you sometime next week or hopefully sooner. Later!

After dicking around too much with formatting my Tweets and having them go schizo on me (“We are everywhere on these posts, even within ourselves!!”), I decided to change it up. Instead of doing the copy-paste straight from my Twitter to here like I used to, I copy-paste from my Twitter to Microsoft Word, clean it up, and then copy-paste it here. Although the colors aren’t as Twitter-authentic, I like the overall cleanliness of this new format. What do you guys think?

I’m really diggin’ what Jane Carrey is doing musically and yes, she’s the daughter of one of my comedic idols, Jim Carrey!

Also, I’m both glad and mad that Paul Reed Smith drastically lowered their prices on some of the SE models, more specifically the SE Custom 24 which has gone down from $665 to a paltry $499. If I was still working at Myles’ Dairy Queen and living at The Enclave II, that guitar would be mine come Christmas time!!

I have some very good news on the TV-selling front! After I posted the apology video and redid the auction, we’ve been getting a lot of bids on it! Although the TV’s not sold yet (the auction ends tomorrow so you’d better hurry and place your bids!!), I’d like to thank you guys for helping me out!! I really appreciate it! Click here for the eBay auction!

I’d also like to point out that while my Japanese introduction video has easily become one of my most-viewed videos as of late, my second Japanese video hasn’t had much viewer action. Was my Japanese that bad? 😉

@TokyoCooney – Yes!! Do it!! Go Cooney!!about 23 hours ago from web in reply to TokyoCooney

Yesterday was a good day! I got paid from my website, bought $20 worth of gas, a 10-pack of DVD+Rs, and tried out those newly-priced double cheeseburgers from Burger King. They were good, but boy were they filling! I didn’t end up eating supper until around 6 or 7, and I ate the burgers around noon!!

I also watched the first 4 episodes of the English-dubbed version of Bamboo Blade yesterday. Although I’m tickled pink at the fact that it’s coming out in America, I do have some gripes about the voice actors. I love Kirino’s VA and have grown to like Tama’s VA too, but I think that Dan’s VA is a very bad fit and Miya-Miya’s VA’s pronunciation of Dan’s name makes it sound like his name is Don.

I know that she’s trying to be accurate with the Japanese pronunciation and I really appreciate that she’s giving her performance that little bit of extra effort, but when it comes to something that could confuse the casual American anime watchers (“Is his name Dan or Don?”), it’s okay to Americanize it and call him Dan.

Well kiddos, I think it’s time to go out and get myself some lunch. Keep it real, homies!

Deja Vuesday Double Feature: "I’m Goin’ Home" and "My Online Revenue"

In this week’s Deja Vuesday, I’m going to be going through two of my older posts instead of just one! Lucky you!!

Post 1 – I’m Goin’ Home

For the first post, we’ll take a look back three years ago to 2006 when I was in UU and going home for the weekend:

Hey all you crazy cats out there in Web Land, it’s the Andy-San gettin’ ready to go back to Celina for the weekend.

I felt bad for my programming teacher today cuz no one would respond to his verbal questions except for E and Phil every once in a while (out of pity it seemed). After class we went to the ‘Hut for the buffet. Then during my 2nd computer class for the first time we actually talked to our teacher (usually he does what we like to call “whiteboard talking” where he just talks to the whiteboard not caring if we pay attention or not) and I guess he was a tad surprised that we spoke up.

But yeah, I’m going home this weekend to do laundry and be with my family. Well I’ll see everyone on Sunday. Bye!

Andy-San

Man, I miss the good times that I had with my friends at UU so much!

Although it got really boring in the second semester, the first semester was a blast! It was my first experience living away from my parents and it allowed me to be myself more so than when I lived with them. From the moment that they left the parking lot in August 2006, I felt free. It was scary for a couple of seconds, but then I remembered that my friends were here too so it was much easier to adjust.

Earlier this year when I moved out on my own in June, I felt the same way, but it was different. I knew that I needed to get a job in order to support myself and back at UU, I didn’t need to do that. Although I was worried about having enough money to pay my bills and feed myself, I felt a sense of relief knowing that my best friend Eriopolis was only a couple of blocks away.

I also felt a sense of certainty in being able to find a job. It was the beginning of summer and all of the college kids were home: a perfect time to snag a job. Of course, it was only 3 weeks later that I got a job with Myles Dairy Queen.

Two months after getting kicked out and moving back home, I’m getting restless again and I want to move out on my own again. Once I get a job, I’ll be saving up to move out. After that, I’ll be looking around for jobs in Findlay, which is where I want to move to next. Then after I secure a job in Findlay, I’ll get an apartment and move up there.

In the meantime, I’m going to be taking classes online at Owens starting the beginning of 2010. I’m only going to take two classes so I won’t be overwhelmed or anything. I’m doing this so that I can boost my GPA in order to go back to college full-time and study abroad in Japan.

Post 2 – My Online Revenue

The second post was written a year ago in 2008 when I was going over how much money I was making online:

Hey everyone, I just got done looking through what I’ve made off of this site. Although I can’t give exact figures, I can say that I’ve made a little under $20 this month.

I’ve found that my big money maker was the Text Link Ads. I forgot all about them for awhile, but then they started pulling in some money. The next big draw was Associated Content. I submitted my review of Kaman no Maid Guy to test them out and everything went just fine. I think that I’ll be submitting most if not all of my posts to them. I might also submit some videos to them as well.

Now as for the other ads, they’re not doin’ so hot. Chikita is beginning to pick up some steam, but it’s not really working out for me at the moment. As for the others, I haven’t earned anything from them. Starting tomorrow, I’ll be doing a little housecleaning on TheAndySan.com.

I’m happy to report that for the month of October 2009, I received not only the highest amount of income from this website (a little under $40), but the highest amount of viewers since I started TheAndySan.com back in June 2008 (858 viewers)!! Thanks so much everyone for helping make this happen!! I hope to break that record this month, and with some of the post ideas that I’ve got on the back-burner, I’m confident in surpassing 858 viewers this month!

However, I can’t do this alone. I need help from you my viewers in order to make this a reality. Leave a comment, write a blog post about one of my posts, or just tell your friends about me and what I’m doing on my website. Thanks again for your help!!

The other day, Jon found an old letter that Dad wrote to me. I’ll post it up here in a couple of days. It was really surreal reading it. Although it was written when I was seven, it felt like he was talking to the present me and not just that seven-year-old who was going to his first concert with Paul McCartney at the Pontiac Silverdome. Ever since reading that letter, I’ve been playing guitar a lot more and coming up with some nifty riffs. I might post videos or MP3s of them later on. I might also do some more singing videos since I really enjoyed singing Instant Karma. What song would you guys like me to sing? Leave me a comment!

Well, I’m off to play some moAr guitar so I’ll see you guys!

TheAndySan

The post that I did for my dad’s letter, A Note From Dad Before The Concert, is one of my favorite posts as it covers a topic that has affected me for over 5 years; did Dad want me to follow in his footsteps and pick up the guitar? After reading the letter, I now know that his answer would be a resounding yes!

Although I’m not much of a singer, I do fancy myself as a good riffer and rhythm player. I’d still like to learn how to sing and play guitar at the same time though because it’s been an obstacle of mine for some time now. Being able to sing and play at the same time will also help me get into songwriting. which is something that I want to pursue next in my progression as a musician.

Well gang, it’s been fun looking back, but now it’s time to look forward! See you guys on Wednesday when I review another killer album!

TheAndySan

P.S: I can’t stop listening to For Your Entertainment by Adam Lambert!! Seriously, preorder Adam Lambert’s debut album For Your Entertainment from Amazon right now!!

Vlog 24 – Apologies, Frustration, & Goals

Click here for the eBay auction!

I want to begin this post by first and foremost apologizing to my stepdad for some rude comments that I made to the eBay auction for his TV. I was angry at some of the people who emailed me lowball offers and also at my stepdad who I felt wasn’t lowering his reserve price to compete in today’s online market. However, I had lost sight of the fact that this television has been with us for two years and has never given us a single problem. It’s still in excellent condition, shelves and all. Although yes, you can get a flat screen at Wal-Mart for a lower price, I honestly find it difficult to put a price on reliability.

I had also put in the auction the reason why we were selling it. I felt that doing that would give the auction a personal touch and would persuade people to purchase the TV. My mom thought it was just weird and that “nobody puts up comments on eBay.” I also apologize for doing that.

Although I believe that I was acting in the right for trying to put a personal touch on the auction, it was wrong of me to make nasty comments no matter how you slice it. It has made my family feel like I had slapped them in the face, despite taking me in again and giving me food and even helping me move out to begin with. For this, I also apologize.

I did put the TV back up on eBay so if you’d like to check it out, click here.

Now, I’ve noticed over the past couple of weeks that I’ve become more prone to fits of anger, despite the happy-go-lucky guy you see on YouTube. I dunno if it’s the change of seasons or that my job situation isn’t going where I want it to or that I’m not yet making enough money from my website to support myself. Maybe it’s none of these things. Maybe it’s all of them.

All I know is that I need to get a job so that I can save up to move out again. Once I’ve secured a job and moved out, then I can work on becoming financially independant from a minimum wage job via my blog. I know that all of the sceptics are rolling their eyes at me and thinking that I should get real and stick with a regular 9-5 existance. However, I know in my heart that I won’t be truely happy working a normal job, whether or not I like my coworkers and/or bosses. Besides, if I can make close to $40 a month doing what I love, then I can surely bump it up to a level where I can live a good life doing only what I love. It’s only a matter of time and continually doing what I love before I reach that point in my life.

My album review videos have been getting very positive feedback, as well as my brand-new YouTube collaboration with BobbyJudo and CrimsonIgloo where I speak in Japanese and they coach me on how I can improve. By doing these reviews and collaborations, I know that I’m doing a good service to the YouTube community as well as people interested in the albums or learning Japanese. As a result, I know that my subscriber count and my video views will continue to increase. With that, I’ll be able to increase the traffic to my website and thus, my income.

I’m not trying to come off as arrogant or as a self-fulfilling prophet; I am mearly stating that I can do what I love and make a living doing it.

I’m going to talk to Taco Bell in the morning to see if I can get my old job back from there as well as look into some more job opportunities in the area. See you guys again soon!

Buy Our Philips 60PP9200D 60-Inch HDTV Television With Shelves

If you can’t see the video above, click here.

Hey guys!

My stepdad is selling our main TV because we’re going to get a flat-screen TV for Christmas and need the money for it. Also, it’s been with our family for two years and I think that it’s time for a change. The TV is still in great working condition too and also comes with a remote and the surrounding shelves. Because of its large size, it’s only available for local pickup. I’ll work out an arrangement with the buyer to meet at a public place so that they can follow me back home to pick up the TV.

You can purchase the TV from either eBay or Craigslist and it’s first come first serve so whoever buys it first will get it. Happy bidding to all!!
