Life In…Video 12 – Slater’s 50/50 Burgers By Design In San Diego CA

Okay, so it’s been awhile since I’ve done an honest-to-goodness blog post (I believe I said the same thing the last time I wrote one out), but there is a special reason for it!

I missed out on celebrating my 1,000th blog post because I forgot about it, and by that time my Darkwing Duck PMV got released.

Anywho, onto my reflection of 1,000+ blog posts!

Blogging Vs. Vlogging: Battling The Seven Year Itch

Back in 2004 when I started my first website (a snazzy GeoCities page called Andy’s Ultimate Site of Ultimateness), I was estatic! Not too many kids my age had their own websites aside from MySpace (really showing my age here) and I had done a lot of coding and tweaking on it by GeoCities standards so it would look halfway decent.

I already knew what I wanted out of my website aesthetically speaking: something simple, clean, and easy to use (like a certain search engine). My website has had its moments of widget overkill and button clutter, but I think I’ve done a good job of keeping the site looking clean.

In 2008, I started vlogging when I bought my first camera on eBay (a Sanyo Xacti CG-6 that I gave to my younger brother Roger) and the direction of my website would be forever changed. I changed the focus of my blog from a strictly-text format (with the occasional picture or video) to a now strictly-video-with-description-text format.

Has the switch from blogging to vlogging been for the better? Of course! Let’s examine a couple of advantages/disadvantages of video and text that pertain to me:

Video’s Advantages

1. Video allows for a greater palette of creative expression
2. YouTube has allowed me to reach & interact easily with a whole new audience

Video’s Disadvantages

In the beginning, you had a website and that was pretty much it. God forbid nowadays if you’re not on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Google+, reddit, StumbleUpon, Tumblr, etc. I don’t see the concept of social media falling off the face of the planet, so I don’t mind using it as a means of distributing my content. It’s when a new social media platform comes out every week that’s “the next Twitter” is when I get fed up with social media!

I’ve come to a point where I don’t want to be on every friggin’ social media platform under the sun! Rather than try to build an audience on every new site that pops up and spreading myself too thin, I want to focus on building up my audiences on the platforms that I already have. If a new platform comes out that I think is neat and can help me express my creativity rather than just be another place to shout into space (as if I don’t do that enough), then I’ll be more than happy to try it out. That’s why I made the jump to Google+ and The Cheezburger Network: it’s fun!

The Future of TheAndySan

As a member of the US Navy, I’ll get to travel the world and get to experience so much in the next 5 years. You better believe that I’ll be sharing my experiences with you guys!

Right now, I’m waiting to take my final course in January before I get orders to my first ship. It’s hard to relate to myself as a Sailor sometimes since I haven’t been deployed on a ship, but I’m just learning the basics of my craft right now so I can’t be too hard on myself.

As far as future videos and stuff like that goes, I plan on making YouTube Partner next year so I’ll be removing ALL of my videos that YouTube has flagged for content by the beginning of 2012. These include my concert videos and videos with copyrighted music in them. I’ll be moving these videos to my secondary channel on YouTube, so they won’t be gone forever.

I’ll be coming home for the holidays, so I’ll also be working on releasing unfinished videos that I’ve accumulated this year due to lack of time or switching to another project. These include more unboxing videos as well as a tour of Convoy Street in San Diego!

Also, two of my older video series are coming back! N-FAQs Season 2 will be released on a part-time basis (basically whenever I get a good question and some free time rather than on every Thursday like before). WAR Season 2 will be released after ALL of the videos for this season are complete.

The reason I’m doing these series in these formats is so I don’t have to race against the clock to upload something and have to cut too many corners just to get it out on time. I might make some changes along the way, but we’ll see when we get there.
