Hey gang, It’s TheAndySan back here from MEPS!

If you’re wondering why there’s no sound in this video, it’s because my camera didn’t record it for some odd reason. I tested it again tonight and it recorded just fine so it must have been just a freak thing I guess.

I’m proud to announce that I PASSED my weigh-in at MEPS!! I still have to diet and exercise to keep my weigh down, but I don’t have to be quite as strict about it. Needless to say, I’m really excited!!

I do have some bad news though. I wasn’t able to get my rating (job) or be sworn in because they didn’t have any ratings for men that day (just women). I’m going back to MEPS for the 3rd time at the end of the month in hopes that I’ll get my IT rating. If it’s not available, I wouldn’t mind doing something else in the Cryptology department,

As I had promised in my previous vlog, I has a surprise for you guys! I got my Federal tax return back and decided to spoil myself a little bit, so I bought a used copy of Pokemon Diamond for about $20 at GameStop. I know, I know; I’m too old to play these kiddie games, but I love the original RPG-style Pokemon games very much! In fact, it was through the Pokemon comics in Nintendo Power that I began to watch Pokemon on TV and thus anime. Even though I watched My Neighbor Totaro and Samurai Pizza Cats long before Pokemon, it was Pokemon along with DragonBall-Z that originally got me interested in anime.

Anyway, I’d also like to ask you guys for some ideas for future videos. I have a couple in mind, but I want to hear from you, my audience, first. Please feel free to leave me your suggestions in the comments below!

If it’s an idea for an anime review, please try to make it a 13-26 episode series instead of a long epic like Naruto or One Piece. It’s not that I hate long-running anime (I love Bleach and I’m getting back into One Piece), it’s just that it would take me forever to do a review for them, and even if I did manage to do it, it would be too generic as the great seasons (or sagas, whatever you call them) would be weighed down by the crappy ones. For now, I’d also like to stick with something from within the past five years to draw in more viewers. OVAs are perfectly acceptable too! I’m also bouncing around an idea in my head for a collab video with my best bud Eriopolis, so keep your eyes peeled for that too!

Well kids, that’s all the time I have for today. I won’t be able to get online at all next week so I’ll see you guys sometime the following week, probably before I go back to MEPS. Until then, I’ll be playing Pokemon Diamond and watching some newly-downloaded anime. See ya next time!!

Vlog 35 – MEPS Weigh-In Results & The Surprise Is Revealed

Happy Holidays everybody!!

Sorry this came out waaaay later than normal, but I had a ton of stuff to do today.

For this week’s Holiday Edition of Deja Vuesday, I’d like to take a look back to five years ago when I was reflecting upon the financial consequences of buying a $23,000 trading card:

Hey, what’s goin’ on? I finally added the TTGC bios after I forgot to last time. Sorry! I removed the cool former theme of Whuzzupp!! for an adequete Mega Man X3 Intro Stage MIDI. The reason behind this is because everytime I try to add anything to the site, my data transfer limit is exceeded. So while we will all miss this incredibly cool theme, I must remove it for the sake of the rest of the site. Back then, it was hard to add multimedia to websites because you were always afraid of exceeding the allowed daily bandwidth, even if you were just checking the pages to see if everything was working. Now, it’s much easier to add multimedia to a website thanks to services like YouTube and Flickr, not to mention the increased bandwidth that’s able to handle it all.

Sometimes, I miss the early days because websites were simpler to design and maintain than nowadays, but all I have to do is visit a random MySpace page to remind myself that technology progresses for a reason.

Well boys and girls, the holidays are upon us. And yes, I did here about the idiot that bought the $23,000 Cyber-Stein when he knows full well that Upper Deck is gonna re-release it as an easier-to-get promo card. Duh! And my folks say that spending $20 on cards is stupid…I mean honestly, who out there has 23 large to spend on one single card? Anyone? C’mon, don’t be shy. I guess no one except that idjit (translation: big idiot). Now if I had 23 big ones, besides obvious choices on what to spend it on, (car, house, semi-permenent vacation from McDonald’s, the list goes on), I would make sure it was all well-spent. Even if I used every last cent on nothing but Yu-Gi-Oh cards, I would make sure I got the most bang for my buck. For example, instead of getting 1 card, I would get lots and lots of booster boxes. Or better yet, I would buy UDE stock.

The first review of the (at the time) tournament legal Cyber Stein can be found here via Pojo.com. Five years later, I still think that $23,000 is a ridiculous amount to pay for a trading card!

Well anyway, now that I’m out of Rant-Mode, I finally have my computer upgraded and man, what a difference! I went from my rockin (sarcastic) 128 MB of RAM to a poultry 640 MB of RAM. I also got a DVD burner, which is kickin’! I can’t wait to get another 512 MB stick of RAM! As of this update, all of my Christmas shopping is done! Huzzah!! All I have to do is give out the presents for my friends Eric and Steve. By the way, Eric; if you’re reading this, please update your site. I’m sure all of us would love to here what you’ve been up to lately.

Oh my, how the times have changed! In March of 2009, I bought my HP Pavilion dv9000 laptop on eBay, which is also my third computer overall. It has 2 GB of DDR2 RAM, an AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-56 dual-core processor, and a DVD burner. Ironically, the laptop’s DVD burner is slower than the one for my desktop, and it’s five years old!

Since I don’t have a job, I don’t have the funds to buy stuff for my friends (or even myself). Sorry guys!

Speaking of jobs, I did have an interview today for a temporary position at a local bank that went well. I should hear back from them by the beginning of next year if I’m hired. I can’t wait!! *fingers crossed*

In other news, our local Wal-Mart is announcing a Duelist League coming in January. That’s all I heard so far. I will keep you updated when possible. Another bit of local news, we are scheduled to be buried in snow 5 to 10 inches deep. Huzzah!! A White Christmas!!!

Well, boys and girls, it’s that time. Time to go the the outside world to deliver the first of my presents to Steve, as he is the closest, it’s getting dark, and with the descent of 5-10 in. of snow coming, he is the best choice. Sorry Eric, but you and Ben’s present is coming. Buh-By!

It’s too bad that I didn’t get into Magic: The Gathering as much as I did for Yu-Gi-Oh! because I sometimes miss playing it with Eriopolis, Cody, and everybody else. Since there’s no (decent) MTG video game and the online version is so-so, I can’t practice by myself. Also, money’s tight so my buying abilities are limited.

Deja Vuesday Holiday Edition – 12/22/2004

Hey guys, it’s time for this week’s Deja Vuesday!!

Just like last week’s Deja Vuesday, I thought that I’d make this one double-sized too.

Let’s start off with a post I did three years ago when I was on Christmas Break from UU:

What a MindRide…

…Yo it be the Andy-San here at home again.

It seems that I’m updating more than I thought I would be. Anyway, I just got done watching Neon Genesis Evangelion and I gotta say it’s quite the mindride. I still have to see the movies though.

Lately, I’ve been watching several anime series like Sora no Otoshimono (aka the flying panties anime) and Ichigo Mashimaro. They’re pretty good, but I’m still holding out for the next big series.

Now that I’m done watching Eva for the time being, I can focus on completing the DoD project. I’m not sure if I should record it at E’s or here on Jon’s computer.

Ahh, the DoD project! It was a good idea, but I was so unskilled on guitar at that time, not to mention trying to schedule recording during Christmastime, that it didn’t happen. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll enter. One day…

For those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about, DoD stands for Dwelling of Duels and it’s a monthly contest where you submit a cover of a video game song.

I’ve also made it my goal to lose weight as soon as I come back to UU. I’ll walk, eat right, and do what it takes to get down to my goal of 170 lbs (I’m at 220 lbs).

I’ve been working out for the past week to lose some weight (at least 2 inches from my waist). I’m doing this so that I can get into the Navy Reserve. I’ll cover why I decided to join in an upcoming vlog as there’s too much to discuss in this post.

Music is an important, although overlooked, aspect of writing.

When I wrote back in college, I listened to a lot of heavy metal. I noticed that my overall tone was of anger and immediacy. Of course other circumstances contributed to my tone (financial problems, depression, etc.), but music certainly had a helping hand.

Nowadays when I write, I usually listen to guys like Al Di Meola and Owl City. They’re super-mellow and allow me to think clearly when I write.

What do you guys listen to while you’re writing? Do you have any music on or do you think that silence is golden? Do you prefer ambient background noise to music? I’d like to hear what you have to say in the comments below!!

Not much has changed since I wrote this as I still listen to mellow music when I write. In fact, I’m listening to Owl City right now as I’m writing this!

Don’t get me wrong, I sometimes listen to heavier and faster music when I write; but for the most part, I stick with Owl City and Al Di Meola.

Well, this has been a fun romp through some of my back catalog, but I’m going out to eat so I’ll see you guys later!

Deja Vuesday Double Edition – What a MindRide…& Who Do You Listen To When You Blog?

Hey guys!

Since I wasn’t able to finish last week’s Deja Vuesday, I’m making this week’s Deja Vuesday twice as big!!

We’re gonna kick it off by going back three years to when I was dreading coming home from UU for Christmas Break:

…Till my birthday!!! Hey guys it be the Andy-San here trying to relax from the thought of going home for Christmas.

I had no exams to worry about today so I went on a walk to McDonald’s cuz I missed lunch. I tried to play Tetris DS on the WiFi but no one was online so I just played a marathon and left. I then walked to the music store to see if they got something new to play with. They didn’t so I just messed around on the keyboards and discovered a couple new riffs. After that I walked back to campus and waved at Dan as he was leaving to go home for winter break.

Wow, I haven’t been to J & L Music since I left Urbana back in 2007! It was a pretty small store, but I enjoyed going there and playing on the keyboards when I went out on walks. I played their guitars a couple of times, but I enjoyed their keyboards much more.

In other news, my bro Jon bought his first guitar; a Les Paul clone. He didn’t have the money for an amp or anything else besides the guitar, some picks, and a gigbag. He says that it’s horribly out of tune but he’s been practicing Stairway to Heaven so I’ll work with him on getting better over the break. I’ve been practicing like mad lately but I still can’t do some chords right despite being Lord of the Fifths (kinda like power chords but using only 2 strings instead of 3).

So, Jon’s been playing guitar for three years now? Wow, how times flies! In January, I’ll have played guitar for five years. I did originally pick up the guitar around 1992 when I was seven, but I quit shortly after and didn’t pick it back up again until 2005 when I was nineteen.

I’m still quite uneasy about going home for break because my parents will get on my case about not having enough money to get a car and spending it on “bullshit”. And my stepdad’s gonna find out that I quit my job working in the cafeteria eventually. If and when that happens he’s gonna be furious. However I’ll tell him that I’m getting a work study job with the IT department on campus this coming semester so it won’t matter.

Well I’m gonna go and do something (I don’t know what) so take ‘er easy!

Well, it seems that not much has changed when it comes to my parents getting on my case about stuff. This is something that shouldn’t be a problem for me since I should be living on my own at this point in my life, but I believe that things happen for a reason. I’m sure that I’ll be back on my own in a couple of months, I just know it!

Greetings and welcome to the revamped AnJa. No, AEC isn’t operational. But, I have corrected and updated the site. Why have I renamed the site? Well, “Andy’s Ultimate Site of Ultimateness” isn’t exactly search-engine friendly, so I renamed it to AnJa, a much easier-to-search name. I do apologize for the long lapse in updates, but I’ve been busy with work & school and my computer has 128 MB of RAM, which makes it very difficult to have multiple programs up at the same time, especially Yahoo! Pagebuilder, that memory-hungry little…

At this point, my Dell desktop that I had bought for my high school graduation, which is currently collecting dust downstairs in my basement, wasn’t powerful enough to run the web editing programs that I was using (i.e: Dreamweaver & Yahoo! PageBuilder). Later on, I added an extra 512 MB stick of DDR RAM and a couple of hard drives that all added up to 720 GB.

Well anyway, I am for sure going to give you a sneek peek at my new comic, “Teen Titans: Genesis Chronicles” as well as bios for TT:GC and Teen Titans (as in the show). Also, today is a very special day. Today is my B-Day. I’m now 19. Huzzah! I plan on buying that new Nintendo DS for X-Mas. I saw tons of pix & clipx of it and it is DA BOMB! My only gripe on it is the lack of games for it: only 6 will be available for the holidays, which is DA BUM! Oh well. I’ll have to wait until ‘05 to get the good games, namely the Yu-Gi-Oh! game. On My 24th Birthday, I Give You 24 Things I Want To Do Before I Die

Alrighty boys and girls, it’s that time of the week when I take one of my older posts, dust it off real nice, and talk about how it relates to me today!

In this week’s Deja Vuesday, we’re going back a full year to 2008 when I received a question about how to make money online:

It All Started With A Question

My friend Adam asked me a question on FaceBook today. He asked:

“So I’ve seen quite a few people actually try to make some dough with blogs. Some succeeding.

I used to blog.. on Xanga.. but then everyone stopped doing it.. so I stopped doing it too.

If I could make 10-30 bucks a month.. that’d be sweet. So where do i start if i wanna make money with it? Give me some help dude. I wanna document the life and times of an aspiring jazz musician in acollege of music.”

Since I published this article, Adam has created his own blog and told me that he’s making around $20 in AdSense revenue. That’s pretty impressive considering that I’ve been writing articles for years and I only make around $37 a month. Then again, if I didn’t screw with AdSense back in the day, I’d be making more money, but c’est la vie…

Buying a Domain Name & Hosting

Well Adam, that’s fairly easy, especially since you have a good topic (my problem is I can’t stick to one topic). If you want to get a good start as a blogger, purchase your own domain name. Sure, you could go through third-party blogs like MySpace, LiveJournal, Xanga, etc, but you’ll have the most freedom from purchasing your own domain name.

I use WordPress as my blog software. For hosting, I use DreamHost. It’s been pretty reliable so far.

When you’re thinking of a domain name, I’d go with something instantly recognizable and without numbers. For example, www.minording.com is available.

After you’ve settled on a domain name, go through a hosting company like DreamHost, BlueHost, Laughing Squid, etc. Make sure that they can do an auto-install of WordPress. That’s one of the major reasons I went through DreamHost is because they have one-click installs. Sure, I could install everything myself, but I want to make the whole process as efficient as possible so auto-installs are the way to go!

Once WordPress is installed, just follow the prompts to build your website & blog. Although I just have a blog on my website, WordPress can build an entire website as well as a blog.

WordPress has sure come a long way in only a year’s time! Now you can update it by going into the dashboard for WordPress instead of messing with DreamHost’s one-click installs every time it needs to update. I like using the one-click installs to put it up initially, but going back every single time WordPress issued an update was getting tedious.

What Are Your Visitors Doing?

One of the most important things to put up in your blog is Google Analytics. It give you a comprehensive overview of your website. It tells you where your visitors are coming from, how many you’re getting, everything. I can’t recommend it enough!

Seriously, this is critical! If I didn’t have any kind of analytics software, then I wouldn’t know how many people are visiting my website, what posts they’re reading the most, when they come here the most, etc. Without these statistics, I would have no clue as to what posts my readers like and when they like to read them.

Moving my update schedule from 10pm-12am EST to 1pm-5pm EST has seen an incredibly positive shift in the amount of viewers that I get. I still do nightly posts from time to time, but my main posts are done between 1pm and 5pm EST, mostly around 2pm EST.

How To Make Money, Money, Money!

Now as far as monetizing goes, the king in that regard is Google AdSense. Just follow the instructions and you should be good to go. Another service that’s been working great for me is Text Link Ads. If you have a PayPal account, I’d definitely put up a Donations button.

One way you could monetize your content is by going through a service like Associated Content. You can submit virtually anything in about any format (text, video, audio, picture, etc). If you choose to submit content that is Non-Exclusive (recommended), you can later submit it to your blog once it’s published on AC. This way, you get more content for your website AND you get paid for it via AC before it hits your website. It’s a win-win!

You have an excellent topic in hand (becoming a successful jazz musician). You have a variety of means in which you can add content to your site. You can give out lessons, either via text, pictures, or video (I’d recommend all three at once). Post some lessons on YouTube and embed them in your post. For pictures, I’d go through something like Flickr or Picasta or something like that and embed them into your post. You could post pictures of close-up hand positions, tabs, musical notation, etc.

In addition to posting lessons, you can also record your gigs. This not only gives your viewers your resume-of-sorts, but it can also help land you gigs if you get enough exposure. Just look at what it did for Tay Zonday aka the Chocolate Rain guy!

I would also post about your experiences and what you’ve learned from them. Experience is what makes the difference between learning from a book and learning in real life. It could be about gig disasters, meeting your heroes, making a difference in someone’s life through your music, etc.

Remember, the name of the game is exposure. The more you put yourself out there, the more possibilities and opportunities open themselves for you.

I haven’t used Associated Content at all since they rejected my review of Myself ; Yourself because they don’t pay for reviews anymore. I still use services like SocialSpark and PayPerPost whenever they ask me to do a post (like the two I did before this post). Text-Link-Ads is still my number-one moneymaker, pulling in over $37 every month. I’m beginning to get back into using Amazon Associates by tying it in with my reviews. So far, I’ve sold one CD (it was Orianthi’s Believe album) and I think I’ll continue to use Amazon Associates like this, but I’m gonna skip the banners and all that stuff.

How Monetization Really Works

Adam then asks:

“Yeah. So like you did calculating.. how many hits/clicks would I need for like.. 300 bucks or something.. an estimate.”

It varies a lot. It all depends on what keywords are clicked, how many clicks you get, how many visitors you get, etc. One click could range from a penny to a dollar to five dollars to more. For example, somebody clicked on one of my text link ads and I got $5 from it. Another text link ad got me $1.05. Going from my examples, you would need between 60-286 clicks to generate $300. If you’re pulling in the traffic, this is an easy task. That’s kind of where I’m at right now; I’m building content, seeing what connects with people and what doesn’t, and slowly building a following (I’m averaging 28 visitors a day).

After blogging for over five years, I’m still learning how to monetize my website. There’s new programs and different monetization methods coming out all the time, and I’m always doing research on what the next big thing in online money-making is gonna be, as well as how my viewers react to such changes on my website and individual posts.

I’m also still building traffic and an online rapport. It’s weird to think that some of my YouTube viewers think I’m an up-and-comer, even though I’ve been around a lot longer than pretty much every e-celebrity except Fred (May 1st, 2006 is when I officially joined YouTube, although I’ve been browsing around it since the early days back in 2005).

Express Yourself

To be perfectly honest, I wouldn’t focus a lot on the making money part until you have at least a month’s worth of content. That’s not to say that you can’t immediately monetize it; it’s just so much easier to make money when you have something on the table to offer people.

These things generally take time to build up the traffic and the money, but the payoff is well worth it because although I only average 28 daily visitors, it feels good to know that 28 people took time out of whatever they were doing to read and/or watch what I’m doing.

Bottom line: be creative and be yourself. Sure, I use an online nickname (TheAndySan), but I use that to differentiate myself from all the other Andys and AndySans and whatnot.

Deja Vuesday: How Do I Start Blogging?

Because of the lack of vlogs for this week, I’ve decided to make it up to you guys by doubling the size of this week’s Deja Vuesday!

Let’s kick things off with a look back two years ago, in 2007, when I was house-sitting for my folks:

Everyone should be here around 7 in the morning tomorrow so yeah, I want to hear about what they did in Florida this past week. From what I could make out from my conversations with my mom and bro, they stayed in the condo that we were in when we went to Disneyworld (well, not the same exact condo, but in the same condo area, whatever you wanna call it), went to Daytona Beach, and visited the Orlando Guitar Center.

I was jealous of my family going to Florida for the week without me, but it was also nice to get out of my cousin’s stressful house for awhile. This also led to me moving back home shortly after they came back from Florida. I didn’t move out again until June of 2009 when I moved to Bowling Green. Unfortunately, that only lasted a couple of months when I was forced out of my apartment in late August and moved back in with my parents yet again. Because of the move, I had once again become jobless and I’ve been looking for work ever since. Fun-fun…

This week’s been fun, despite not doing anything with my friends since they have a play that they’re involved it (Ben’s in it and Eric’s filming it), but hey, they have their own lives and I can’t be selfish with their time. I mostly stayed at the house when I wasn’t working and went out occasionally, usually to Wal-Mart or the gas station or something like that. It was fun to get away from the noise of where I live. Although I’m grateful to my cousin for letting me stay at his house free of charge, I’m getting the urge to go elsewhere. It could be due to living with other people, the berserk dog (she loves me, but she’s very annoying), or just that sense of “it’s time to move out on your own” that’s compelling me to move out.

However, I cannot do that just yet. If my parents agree to cosign loans to pay off my debt to UU and loans to get me into UU, then I can finish college and fulfill one of my life’s dreams: to visit and teach English in Japan. Although I probably won’t teach for an especially long time, it will help me learn Japanese culture and in turn, learn more about myself. It may seem like an unlucrative dream, but as with all matters of the heart, it just feels like the right thing to do. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I feel like I’ve come a long way since I graduated high school in 2004 (going on 4 years!!!!). I feel that I’ve substantially grown as a person, and I’ve learned from the mistakes of my parents and my own mistakes. I realize that if I continue to sit idly by and not apply myself to anything, then I’ll end up like my aunt and dad; eternally stuck in a prison of self-doubt without the key of self-discipline to open the door of opportunity and escape. The lesson became painfully clear when I was suspended both times from UU, and after picking up the pieces of myself, I vowed to hang in there if I would ever be able to go back no matter how rough things got. Also, I know what is expected of me and I plan on living up to those expectations. Of course, this will all amount to nothing if I’m not given the chance to go back to UU and prove myself. In seeking the wisdom of people who’ve been in a situation similar to mine, I’ve learned that I shouldn’t worry about failure because it’s a natural part of learning. Think of it this way: if you had given up trying to walk because you’d been falling on your butt everytime, then you’d be carted around in a wheelchair for the rest of your life. No offense to those who really can’t walk, but I’m positive that even they will sympathize when I say that it would be pathetic for someone who’s perfectly capable of walking to just give up because he fell on his butt a couple times. So if you think you haven’t a shred of self-discipline, just stand up and walk.

Wow, I really went off on a tangent there, didn’t I? Oh, I forgot to mention in that big, scary paragraph that if I can go back to UU that I want to minor in English. When the top English professor on campus recommends this, it’s a sure sign to follow through. Like I said before, my plans after I graduate college is to teach English in Japan. After that, well, it’s for me to discover for myself. Whether it’s in music, computers, teaching, or something completely different, I’m sure I’ll find myself when I live in Japan.

Yeah, my parents aren’t gonna cosign shit for me anymore. I know now that if I want to go to college and then Japan, I have to do it all by myself. This is why I’m going to look into taking online courses after I turn 24 and then transferring to another college that has a study-abroad program that will let me study in Japan. If I have to be in a certain year to study abroad, and some colleges require that students interested in studying abroad must be in their junior or senior year, then I’ll continue to take classes online until I’m at that level. I’ll also take advantage of any Japanese courses that are available.

Although I said that it would be unlikely that I’ll be moving to Michigan, I’m starting to warm up to the idea since my cousin and her boyfriend are beginning to find job opportunities in the area. Also, the apartment that we’ll be living in is owned by his grandparents so we’ll have some flexibility when dealing with the landlords.

In other news, I’ve been practicing scales and sometimes modes this week and I’m doing pretty good if I do say so myself. I’ve also been debating on what amp half-stack to buy when I get the money to do so. I could buy a Marshall MG100HDFX full stack for around $850. Even though the half-stack, which goes for around $599, is Musician’s Friend’s best selling amp period, it’s a solid-state amp which is a big strike against it. The Peavey Valveking half-stack goes for the price of $899 (I couldn’t find it as a full-stack). It’s an all-tube amp, which means that it’ll have a much better and louder sound (usually). The only drawbacks I could see are the lack of a full-stack option (which could be remedied by buying another Valveking cabinet) and the channel switch is sold separatly (I think the Marshall’s the same way, but I dunno). As with any amp, I won’t know for certain if I should buy it until I try it out for myself.

Man, I haven’t touched a guitar in a couple of weeks and it feels awful! With the majority of my time devoted to looking for a job and to blogging and vlogging, I had to cut back on my guitar playing. I really need to practice so I don’t become rusty! A Note From Dad Before The Concert

This blog entry take me back to 2008, just one year ago, when I discovered a note that my dad had written to me before I went to my very first concert:

My brother was rummaging through our late dad’s briefcase earlier today. He found an old letter that Dad wrote to me. According to the date, which I have provided, it was written before my first concert with Paul McCartney when I was just seven years old.

As I read it, on Halloween no less, I had a strange feeling that he read my mind from beyond the grave. All my worries and “What if?” questions that have been racing through my head since he passed in 2004 seemed to vanish.

There have been times in my life when I wondered if Dad really wanted me to create music. He didn’t teach me guitar because, according to Mom, he didn’t have the patience. He was a little leery when I asked him if I should buy a Legend of Zelda ocarina or a Game Boy Advance. I went with the GBA, but sometimes I wish I had an ocarina, no matter how annoying it would sometimes sound. Although this letter doesn’t let me see much of Dad the guitar player, it gives me a good look at Dad the musician. I now feel certain that relearning how to play guitar (I started out when I was seven, but didn’t pick it up again until I was nineteen) was something that Dad would wholeheartedly approve of.

In copying this letter, I decided to type everything as it was, bad and strange grammar included. So here it is, a note from Dad:

I’m very excited for you, also that you are going to see Paul McCartney. How ever if I could not go together as a family, and enjoy his beautiful music together, I find myself saying something that, well it’s just hard to say, but the memories of the evening in which your mother (with Jon inside of her) and I saw him several years ago. Well let’s just say they were, at least to me, very private and very special and they were memories I shall never forget…In this way my son please try to understand that without you guys (your mother included) even Paul McCartney is really no big deal to me. “BUT” the best wishes and also may you truely enjoy your very first concert a much as possiable OK…Great choice by the way, concert wise I mean picking the “BEST” to see first time out, “GREAT CHOICE”…I hope Mommy makes it a very very special evening for you that you will never forget. Enjoy music “always,” my beautiful child, because if you are ever wondering, “What did, or do I have in common with “MY FATHER”? Well one thing for sure is “MUSIC”…I love you, and will always love you Andy…Don’t ever think any other way. Maybe you could do what has been working and helping to bridge the many miles which for now separate us, sing a song, or songs, or listen to various tapes & CD’s, and I think you will find how small the world’s problems really are, and you may also find HOPE, LOVE, PEACE and most of all “LOVE” I did and still to this day love to play or just listen to music…However I find many groups and many songs very hard to listen to, they bring back memories of times long ago and so far away. Wow! Just wow!

Reading only a little bit of this entry literally brings a tear to my eye! It makes me feel like I had done the right thing in pursuing my journey into creating music, in addition to rediscovering the joys in playing guitar. There’s really not much that I can comment on or add to this post just because I think that it’s perfect the way it is, which is why I chose it for this week’s Deja Vuesday. Besides being one of my all-time favorite posts to read, it has also been one of you guys’ favorites too, judging from the post’s ratings. Thank-you!

Deja Vuesday Double Feature: “I Was Made To Hit In Japan!!1″ and “A Note From Dad Before The Concert”

That’s right, it’s that time of the year when us bloggers collaborate on a grand scale to make people aware of a certain topic. If you recall last year’s Blog Action Day post, I talked about poverty. This year, I’m talking about climate change. However, before I get into that, I wanna talk about what Blog Action Day is. The following text was taken straight from the Blog Action Day website:

Blog Action Day is an annual event that unites the world’s bloggers in posting about the same issue on the same day on their own blogs with the aim of sparking discussion around an issue of global importance. For the past couple of years, Ohio’s summers have been very dry. So dry that there are reports of the nation’s worst crops located uncomfortably close to where I live. Because of the dry summer, the leaves on the trees started to change color and fall only a couple of weeks ago instead of earlier like they used to. There was even a couple of days in January last year that were unseasonably warm, although I quite enjoyed that. Before the dry summers, there was a massive flood in 2003 that damaged several surrounding businesses.

Since the whole point of Blog Action Day is to spark discussion, I encourage you to leave a comment about how climate change has affected you. I look forward to hearing what you have to say!

Buy Megadeth’s Endgame from Amazon!

Over the weekend and doing without Internets, I decided to listen to Endgame, the newest album by Megadeth. Let’s begin the review:

Personal Backstory

I’ve been a fan of Megadeth since the Countdown to Extinction era, although I was a casual fan back then. I enjoyed their radio hits like Symphony of Destruction and Angry Again, which I still think is one of then-lead guitarist Marty Friedman’s best solos, alibiet one of his simplest.

It wasn’t until around when Guitar Hero II came out, with Hanger 18 on it, that I began to look deeper into Megadeth’s discography to find all the good stuff that I was missing by sticking to only the Megadeth that I heard on the radio, especially albums like Rust In Peace and Peace Sells…But Who’s Buying.

Since Megadeth frontman/guitarist Dave Mustaine acquired new lead guitarist Chris Broderick, formerly of Jag Panzer and Nevermore, back in early 2008, many fans including myself have been wondering what this new guy will bring to the arsenal of Megadeth. Read on, Megafan!

The Goodies

Comparisons to Metallica have plagued Megadeth since the very beginning, and when comparing Metallica’s Death Magnetic to Endgame and seeing which band came the closest to how they were at their peak, it’s got to be Megadeth.

Granted, Metallica put out some killer material for Death Magnetic and I’m excited that they’re returning to their older style, but Megadeth has worked long and hard to put their over-commercialized and quite frankly un-Megadeth albums like Risk behind them.

The first single Head Crusher reminds me of the crazy-ass Peace Sells era, and even a little bit of the So Far So Good So What era with the oft-ignored Jeff Young on lead guitar. Poor-poor Jeff, but I digress…

Many a Megadeth fan cringed when they heard the acoustic intro to The Hardest Part of Letting Go…Sealed With a Kiss. Megadeth and grandpa’s guitars? Yeah, like it’s never been done before *coughAToutLaMondecough*. If you can stand to wait a minute or so, then you’ll be treated to an interesting combination of Megadeth and a string orchestra. It honestly reminds me of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, if it was lead by Dave Mustaine. Fun Fact: Al Pitrelli, the lead guitarist that replaced Marty Friedman after he left in January 2000, plays a major part in the Trans-Siberian Orchestra as well as plays in it.

The Baddies

Broderick’s playing style has been compared frequently to Marty Friedman’s, whereas the previous lead guitarist Glen Drover’s style had been compared to Chris Poland’s, although I think that Broderick’s style is closer to Mustaine’s than anyone else’s. Some might call this a complement, and in most regards it is.

However, in the context of Megadeth where the guitar’s leadwork can switch players at the drop of a hat, it’s best when both players have a unique style so that we can tell each player apart when they’re doing their thing. It’s one of the reasons why the Mustaine/Friedman lineup is considered the best, although the Mustaine/Poland lineup produced some of the scariest guitar playing of the 80s this side of Cacophony and Racer X.

If you liked or at least tolorated the style of Megadeth’s previous album United Abominations, then you’ll be in fairly familiar territory, especially when it comes to Mustaine’s vocals. I miss his Alice Cooper-esque snarl, which has turned into more of an Andrew W.K.-esque grunt over the years. Not that it’s a bad thing, but it just doesn’t work on every single song.

Dave’s vocals have little to no change in tone and intention from song to song, unlike during the Rust In Peace and Countdown To Extinction eras where he would switch up between his trademark snarl and growl as well as switch to a surprisingly good singing voice. We’re not talking good from a technical level like Christina Aguilara, but a much better singing voice than one would expect from someone with a vocal style like Dave.

The Uglies

Ever since Dave stopped using Jackson Guitars and switched to using other brands like ESP and now Dean Guitars, I’ve noticed that his tone has gotten a lot bassier and less trebley. Although it still sounds like Dave, I do miss that extra bit of treble that made his guitar tone sizzle.

Chris Broderick, while quite the impressive player who’s been talked of highly by Dave in many interviews (even once comparing finding Broderick to Ozzy finding Randy Rhoads), doesn’t seem to have found his own style within Megadeth. I listened to some of his older material to gain a better perspective on his overall style, and it seems that while he appears to be a very stiff guitar player, every once in awhile he cuts loose and it’s fun to watch him go to town.

He hits all the right notes cleanly and everything and is definitely the best lead guitarist Megadeth has had since Marty Friedman (just watch him play a Megadeth classic like Tornado of Souls), but he needs to put more of himself into his playing or else he’ll just be another guitarist trying in vein to outshine Chris Poland and Marty Friedman.

The Verdict

Despite having a new lead guitarist who hasn’t found a distinguishable style, inevitable and eternal comparisons to Metallica, and vocals that lack dynamics, Megadeth’s Endgame is still proof positive that classic thrash and speed metal still runs strong without having to tune down to Drop-Z like everyone else currently in the metal genre.

Oh wow, where to start? Hmm, how about being tagged in FOUR stalker lists on Facebook? While living on my own at BG, I maintained a weight of 210 lbs, which is pretty impressive considering that I ate mostly take-out food or microwavables. I guess the stress of losing my apartment and my job and moving back in with the ‘rents was enough to throw me off and thus, I gained 7.4 lbs. Yikes!! The good news is that it’s still warm enough to go biking. The bad news is that the pollen count’s too high to go biking. Fuck my life…

Considering that my stepdad was around most of yesterday, I’m surprised that Vlog 20 was recorded, much less uploaded in time! Fortunately, I recorded it when he wasn’t around and uploaded it after he left. I sure hope he doesn’t read my blog though…
