How To Go On An Information Diet

Today, I decided to do something crazy: try to minimize the amount of time that I’m on my computer. Counting the time it’s taking me to write this article, I’ve spent a little over an hour total on the computer today.

Why am I doing this? Well, I had an epiphany last night as I was going to bed. I remembered my childhood and what I did to entertain myself when I had no TV, no computer, nothing. I remember that I wrote some of my best stories when I was grounded in order to keep my mind off of my punishment. I decided to “ground” myself from my computer in order to kickstart my creativity.

I’ve been fairly productive today. I began to write a story that I’ve been working on for awhile. I’ll continue to limit my computer time in order to finally get things going with writing that story.

So how do you go on the information diet? It’s really simple; just “ground” yourself. Take away the things that consume your idle time the most. TV, computer, cell phone, MP3 player; these are just a couple common things. If you want to really exercise your creativity on something, I’ve found that removing any possible distraction has helped me the most. No music, no computer, no TV, no nothing. Just you and whatever you’re working on. It may sound like a lot, but trust me, the benefits are worth it. With nothing to consume your attention, your mind turns inward in order to keep doing something. When this happens, you can tap into your creativity easier.

Well, I’m gonna go play on my acoustic so I’ll see you guys later!

I can relate to this Andy, I’m a real news junkie but had to limit myself while I was busy writing over the last couple of months.

It’s been really hard to do though because there is so much important stuff going on right now.

I also had to call time on browsing the web looking for zombie fiction to read and I haven’t picked up a game for weeks.

But it was worth it, I got my work finished, so I think you are doing the right thing.

    Good luck :)
